There are very few, particular jobs to have while going to school. Whether it's working at a Wawa, a restaurant, a daycare or whatever, it may be you're limited in your choices. You have to be able to work around your school schedule, not go to school around your work schedule.
For my first two years of college, I worked in day cares. I found the job to come naturally to me. I always loved kids and it was fun to spend my afternoons playing with them. Although, working at a daycare is so much more than that. I always loved watching the kids grow and learn. But the best part is just watching them be kids.
One of my good friends had decided to nanny when we started college because she heard tons of good things about it. I'll admit I was skeptical. She had a summer job so she needed someone who wouldn't need her when school ended so she could go to her summer job. She always had awesome hours and made a decent amount more than me. So, I set out to become a nanny myself. Let me just tell you it's one hard job search. Even with care.com it's not easy to find someone who needs you when you're available or is paying what you need.
Just over a year ago, my best friend's mom told me she had a friend who knew someone who was looking for a nanny. She instantly thought of me. And about two weeks later, I was officially going to be a nanny. In the past year, I've had more rewarding experiences than I ever did in a day care setting.
I nanny a girl and a boy. The girl is 11 and the boy is nine. Let me tell you, they give me a run for my money. There are some days when it is not easy and I want to rip most of my hair out. But there are also days when I couldn't love my job more. An average day includes me coming to the house, doing light house work and then getting the kids off the bus. I make sure all their homework is done. I take them to extracurricular activities. I make them dinner. I play outside with them. You name it, I've probably done it. I clean cuts and scraps. Wipe away tears. And laugh at a lot of crazy dance moves. The best days are the ones when they're so happy to see me and never want me to leave.
I love getting to hear about their days. What they learned. How their baseball or softball game was. What they learned at yoga club, the list never really ends. Although, there are days I would rather do anything else. Most days I wouldn't trade my job for the world. I love getting the chance to impact their lives every single day. To get the chance to make them happy when they're sad, to make them laugh when they're mad. At the end of the day, I think I have the best job ever.
