Everyone loves a good binge watch, but with so many options, it can be hard to decide what to mindlessly consume for hours. With new original series, favorite oldies, and shows everyone but you has seen, the watcher’s block can be real. (Watcher’s Block: writer’s block, but with television) Luckily for you, I have been procrastinating a lot lately, which means I have been binging on some great shows. One of the shows is Netflix’s original series "One Day at a Time," based on the sitcom "One Day at a Time" from the 1970s. If you have never seen it, you NEED to start watching it for these five reasons.

1. Focus on the Latinx community

The show centers around a Cuban-American family living in Los Angeles. They discuss difficult topics such as immigration, being white-passing, and racism in America. More and more shows have been showing representation through choosing people of color to play characters, which helps viewers relate to characters they see on screen.

2. Importance of mental health

Many of the characters struggle with their mental health in the show. The mother of the show, Penelope, struggles with PTSD and depression. Her mother believes mental health is made up, which addresses the stigma that still surrounds mental health. In addition, other characters struggle with addiction. The show does a great job of depicting these illnesses and the effects they can have on people.

3. LGBTQA+ representation

Elena, one of the main characters in the show, struggles with her sexual identity. The show addresses how difficult it can be to be yourself, as well as the sad fact that some people will not accept you for who you are. It serves to remind us that love comes in all forms and that it is always beautiful.

4. Family dynamics

This series shows all different aspects of family and the relationships within our families. It shows the difficulties of growing up from the perspective of both a parent and a child, as well as shows the struggles that a single parent family can face. Additionally, it discusses the strain separation/divorce can cause on a family. No matter what your family situation is, there is some aspect you could relate to in this show.

5. Importance of friendship

Along with the role family plays in your life, the show has a great emphasis on the effect of those one chooses to have in their life. Family is not only your blood, but it is also those who are always there for you, through thick and thin.

"One Day at a Time" is a terrific show to binge watch since it talks about serious topics while still being lighthearted and funny. The episodes are short and sweet, plus the theme song is a BOP! There is literally no reason why you should not be streaming an episode right now since we all know you are not going to address your responsibilities.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
