Being a Nursing Major isn't a Personality Trait

"Being A Nursing Major is Not A Personality Trait"

"Why is every psychopath a nursing major?"

"Is nursing a STEM major? How is taking someone's vitals a science?"

"Imagine a nursing major not complaining about being a nursing major"

"My favorite thing about finals week is listening to all the nursing majors complain about being nursing majors"

Lately, I've seen social media posts that are aimed at ridiculing nursing majors, and those quotes above are REAL tweets just within this past month! Though I don't take much offense to it and find the majority to be in light-hearted teasing, I still would like to share my perspective with you on behalf of some nursing majors as a nursing major myself.

Truthfully, it is not unbeknown to me that nursing majors like to boast about their successes, and gripe about their workload. After all, I am a nursing major, and I happened to have spent the past year with 55 of them in my lectures. So, no, I am not going to negate the arguments that nursing majors complain about their major too much. However, I must address the commonly used line "Being a nursing major is not a personality trait" in further detail. All of you are correct, it isn't technically a personality trait, but if, by this, you mean that we talk about nursing too much, then I can find no offense to it. For, one day, we could be a nurse taking care of you or your loved one, and wouldn't you find confidence in the fact that your nurse is so passionate about caring for others that he/she just won't shut up about it? Because in that time we will be:

CARING

DEDICATED

EMPATHETIC

TRUSTING

HONEST

REVERENTIAL

INTELLIGENT

KIND

And guess what! Those ARE personality traits. The reason we talk about it so much, is because our personality traits directly relate to how we:

-Care for our patients

-Dedicate ourselves to beneficence

-The way we empathize with the patient and their family

-Have a trust that patient's place their lives in

-Display honesty in our words and our hands

-Encompass reverence for the patient's mind, body, and spirit

-Possess an intelligence that has the power to save lives

-Overflow with a kindness that has the power to rekindle a broken spirit

But, we don't really want/need your brownie points. I got plenty of brownie points as a 7-year old girl in girl scouts, so that isn't quite necessary. And honestly, I'm not really asking for the social media posts to stop either, because I find humor at the validity of some of them. Really, I am just seeking to enlighten you on our perspective and why we are so proud of who we are.

And to all of my nursing majors: On a real note, I do think these social media posts bring light to a very prevalent issue. As nursing majors, its easy to find complaints hidden within the sleepless nights, impossible exams, and never-ending workload…But we should be proud and excited about changing lives. Let's break the stigma that nursing majors complain about everything and replace it with the idea that nursing majors are filled with excitement for their future. So, drink some coffee (or a lot), get to studying, and experience the joy of being a nursing major😊

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
