Have you ever heard an album that was such good vibes you had to talk about? Well, I have and turns out she is African American at that. Sometimes I try not to go too crazy over albums or music unless they are Drake or Drake. So, an album sounding good enough for me to tell everyone about - is magical in itself. I pride myself on my ability to like all kinds of music - yes, even country - but this one is rap. It is not your typical rap, though, it is more than that. It's positive rap like Chance The Rapper spits. It's more than what you've known to be the rap music genre. The appreciation comes from the heart on this one. This album is like no other and here's my review of all 10 songs. Hopefully you'll take a listen after I am finished.
1. Yesterday
The start to the album was more than beautiful, it was breathtaking. The song starts as a fade away and comes in with Noname rapping very softly like she does. But, the vibe of the song is as if you are walking down NYC and you are so happy you got that job you always wanted and you are making a name for yourself. After you get over how beautiful the actual song is, you listen to the lyrics and you listen to Noname picturing someone's smile like it was yesterday. Someone she loves. Someone she cares about. Memories and how they fade away so easily. Her flow becomes something that makes you shake your head to the beat and smile to yourself because what could be unhappy about such a beautiful song?
A very good starting song to the album, and it set the bar high and exceeds it.
2. Sunny Duet (Featuring theMIND)
Another catchy one. This one starts off with skits and scats of a beautiful melody, by theMIND. It makes you want to close your eyes and just smile because it is such a good vibe song. Noname starts rapping and here's another good one that makes you want to think about that guy or gal you like so much and don't quite know why. But, you smile to yourself because damn, you're in love and they are your sunny duet. The beat is another something that is oh, so, special. The vibes are so good with this one, and there is nothing that can make you smile more than this album and this song.
3. Diddy Bop (Featuring Raury and Cam O'bi)
After the last two songs that were such good vibes, this one calms down for a minute - and it is more personal with Noname. She speaks in diddy bops, she speaks of her childhood, she speaks of what she once knew about her childhood. The features are also so great, Raury and Cam have beautiful voices and beautiful vibes to this song. Always come home before the street lights come on and that is the truth.
This is a good smooth track about childhood - thinking about being young.
4. All I Need (Featuring Xävier Omar)
We are back on track with the fast vibes, again. And, this one - like every one - is good vibes. This song starts rather abruptly compared to the other songs, and her rhymes seem to get stronger and less soft. She is higher. She is stronger on this track. Omar's vocals add such depth to this song, you have the beautiful voice of Noname and with the vocals of Omar it gets even better. Noname's rhymes make you simultaneous happy and nostalgic at the same time - but, it's not a bad nostalgic, it's a damn good one. It makes you think about the times you were happy in your childhood, when you thought about nothing but playing in the sand.
5. Reality Check (Featuring Eryn Allen Kane and Akenya)
ERYN ALLEN, NONAME, and AKENYA. That is all. This song starts off so good. One of my favorites. She speaks a line I personally love "opportunity knocking - a nigga just got her nails done." And, it makes me smile every time I hear it, because it's catchy and kind of funny in a way. This song is a vibe song to drive to. This makes me feel like I am driving with the love of my life to some amazing place like LA and we are looking at the scenery and it is so beautiful. We are looking at how awesome life is - and how beautiful life is. You can't help but smile at how wonderful this song is.
Everything you thought was sucky about your life, means nothing when you hear this song because it's such good vibes.
6. Freedom Interlude
Here's a little one-on-one time with Noname. That's what interlude's are for.
7. Casket Pretty
Another fantastic beat on this track. Another fantastic beat. Casket Pretty is about people dying - our people dying. It is about Noname hoping that she doesn't get a call to her phone. It is about watching the news and seeing Black people keep getting killed. She says a line that says "There's too many babies in suits." And, it hits home. Because too many people are "Casket Pretty / Ain't no one safe in this happy city."
8. Forever (Featuring Ravyn Lenae and Joseph Chilliams)
Why is her voice so beautiful. She starts another beautiful song with her rhymes and about what is going on in her head. She has this line I liked that says, "Everything is everything, but I still haven't paid my rent." But, she's still so happy and she is still so "Life is good." And, I love it. She's talking about "Fuck it, I'll live forever." And, we know she will. The features are great, once again, on this track. Her features are perfect.
9. Bye Bye Baby
Another softly spoken rhyming song that is so great. She is rapping about a baby. She rapping about a metaphor, possibly. But, when you listen to the song you think about a child, a child but also a human. You think about how happy babies feel when they are babies. They are happy and they are positive. They don't care about anything, or anyone - but, they have unconditional love for you. That much she does know. The vibes are good with this one.
10. Shadow Man (Featuring Saba, Smino and Phoelix)
The last songs are quite often the best songs. And that does not fail with this song. It makes you depressed that the album is over. This song is happy and positive and makes you really positive about life. It makes you think to that time you were sitting under the stars with the love of your life and you felt so at home. You felt like someone could be your home - and you never felt that way, but you felt that way then. Your home was them. And, it still is. The stars were bright. The night was perfect. And, you smile to yourself at how beautiful life is.
Overall, 10/10. For her first debut album, she killed it. So much good music that doesn't have to be hardcore rap or trap music. Understandable. If you don't like that, that is fine. But, this album really takes the cake. So much appreciation for Noname and whatever she releases next, you bet I will be first in line to hear it.
