I Didn't Have a Shot Day and That's Fine

How I celebrated my 21st without winding up in the hospital.

The weekend of my 21st my best friend came to see me and we went out to some bars and had a good time but I did not do a shot day.

For those that are unaware, a shot day is when the birthday person goes to bars and takes a total of 21 shots in one day. They are usually documented in shot books which contain decorated page and pictures of each shot inside. Don't get me wrong, I did want to do a shot day, but in the end, it wasn't smart.

A couple weeks earlier I was on the phone with my dad and shared with him my birthday plans. He was not too pleased when I explained what a shot day was. He sent me articles the next day that was about how people have ended up in the hospital due to this stupid tradition and I am glad I decided to not do it.

I am a small girl and I can't really consume a lot of alcohol to start with, so to cram 21 shots into my body didn't seem like the best idea.

I wanted to have a good time and get drinks with my friend but I also wanted to be able to remember the night and not be THAT girl at the bar. I cannot even explain what my parent's reactions would have been if I decided to go through with it and wound up with alcohol poisoning or worse. I only wanted to have a shot day because of all the people I see having them.

It has become a cultural tradition for college students to go out and get stupid drunk just to celebrate their birthday. To be honest, most of the people that have shot days have probably had a lot of practice with drinking but I was not one of those people.

I decided to stay far away from a shot day and bar hop with my friend instead and I think I had a better time doing that. I still got drunk, which I guess is the point of your 21st, but I was able to remember it all, have a good time, and not wake up in the hospital. I encourage you to really think before you partake in this tradition.

Are you doing it for your friends? Can you really do that to yourself? I don't want to be the bummer of the party but I would like to let people know that you can have a fun and fulfilling 21st without absolutely obliterating your liver.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
