Nintendo Has Switched It Up

Why The Switch Has Us Excited for Nintendo Again

Our questions for Nintendo’s long awaited next console were answered on January 12, 2017 when the company held its live stream for the Nintendo Switch. The stream revealed the system console in further detail, as well as unveiled brand new games. I had my hopes up to see something cool, and I was left beyond impressed and excited for what is to come.

For those who don’t know, the Nintendo Switch is the next major console that Nintendo is releasing after the Wii U. The Wii U is regarded mainly as a flop, and this is because there were a lack of games for it. Besides the Zelda remakes that were brought back and improved, especially with The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, Super Mario Maker was what made the Wii U shine. However, that was just one new game to help the console, and it wasn’t enough. The anticipation of the next Zelda game also had people waiting on getting the Wii U, and when it was announced for the next, which was codenamed the “NX,” many decided that the Wii U wasn’t worth it.

Now we have the Nintendo Switch scheduled to come out on March 3rd of this year. Not only is it a home console, but it can also switch to a portable console. This means you can take your game anywhere (with a limited battery life and lower resolution). While this feature is completely new and innovated, it’s the games that have me excited.

I turned the live stream on right when they were introducing Super Mario Odyssey, the next 3D Mario game. Not only is the quality of the game gorgeous, but it brings back the open world feeling of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. The sandbox world was abandoned in Galaxy, and while it was a beautiful game to look at, it often left me bored. I’m looking forward to goofing around in the Mario universe again.

Splatoon 2 was also announced, and many third-party companies were able to bring in their games to the Nintendo platform. Skyrim was one that Bethesda was happy to bring to a Nintendo console, and many others showed off their games that are arriving on the Switch.

The grand finale, though, was The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Zelda fans have been waiting forever for its release, and it’s finally coming out on March 3rd, alongside the release of the Switch. Its beautiful open world concept rivals that of Skyrim’s, and its introduction of voice acting and jumping are completely new in the franchise. The game is also being released on the Wii U, so for those who don’t quite have the $299.99 for the Switch (like me), there’s always the option to get it on the Wii U.

Nintendo’s presentation shows that they’re still in the console wars. The Switch’s inclusion of third party games, an absence of a region lock, and highly anticipated games. I do wish for more franchises to return, such as a new Animal Crossing game, as well as HD remakes (Super Mario Sunshine please!). Regardless, I can’t wait to get my hands on the Nintendo Switch.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
