We're already halfway through 2017 (as scary that is) and some incredible music has already been released. Unfortunately, not every song receives the recognition it deserves. Some music fans would rather stick to their favorite genres and artists without listening to what else is out there. Other music fans just don't have the time to search for a hidden gem on an obscure album that might change their life. Whether you don't have the time or think you don't have the interest, some songs released this year are far too good to be ignored.
Here are nine songs that may change your life for the better and improve your mood, taste and music library.
1. 26 - Paramore
The anthem that preaches, "hold on to hope if you got it" is inspiring and a song that everybody needs to hear. For a little more incentive, when singer John Mayer was asked on Twitter about the last song that made him cry, he tweeted "Paramore. 26. Does anybody realize how important that song is? That song finds your pain and cradles it." He gets it.
2. In The Blood - John Mayer
Speaking of John Mayer, the rocker released his seventh studio album this spring and included this beautiful track with it. "In the Blood" is a raw and honest look at life, love and family values. The song does a lot of soul searching and shows Mayer at his most vulnerable, a rare position for the artist to put himself in.
3. Walking the Wire - Imagine Dragons
Not only are the lyrics to this song super fun and romantic, but the beat is undeniably awesome. "Walking the Wire" is the type of song you'll want to play at the highest volume while cruising down the highway. Seriously though, this song has been stuck in my head since the moment I heard it and Imagine Dragons are officially back and better than ever.
4. Praying - Kesha
Imagine Dragons aren't the only ones back on the music scene - Kesha is here and has a lot to say. Her latest single is her first in over four years and details the struggles she has been facing with her record label and producer. Instead of fighting back with hate, she choses love and faith. This song is the total package and should be an inspiration to all. Note: "Praying" starts about one minute into the video.
5. Rollin - Calvin Harris (feat. Future & Khalid)
It takes a lot to get me to like any song that resembles hip-hop, let alone a song that has rapping in it, however, this song is an exception. "Rollin" is absolute treat every time I hear it. The beat that Calvin Harris generated is unbelievably catchy when paired with the chorus and its definitely the best song on his latest album, Funk Waves Vol. 1.
6. Sober - Lorde
Lorde's sophomore album Melodrama is a masterpiece on its own but then again, it's the songs on the album that make it what it is after all. "Sober" is an upbeat and spontaneous track that highlights the ups and downs of partying. The lyrics, "but what will we do when we're sober?" swim throughout the song, leaving the listener to dissect the story and perhaps put themselves in her shoes. To be blunt, the song is a home run.
7. New Man - Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran is the king of roasts. The lyrics of this song are hilariously honest and make me smile like none other. Personally, my favorite line is "...still looking at your Instagram and I'll be creeping a little. I'll be trying not to double tap, from way back, cause I know that's where the trouble's at." Let's be truthful, this is relatable to all of us, proving that Sheeran knows his audience extremely well.
8. Heavy - Linkin Park (feat. Kiiara)
There's no denying that we lost a legend when Chester Bennington took his own life in July, however, this song isn't put on this list because of that. The song is relatable and a pristine hit from the band that deserves to be heard. "Heavy" might have a been a cry for help from Bennington, as the lyrics are dark and have great depth to them. In 2017, the voice of our childhood left us one final batch of punk-rock jams. RIP, Chester Bennington.
9. Two Ghosts - Harry Styles
Harry Styles has had an unbelievable year. Taking his time to produce an incredible first solo album, the ex-boyband star really broke out of his shell with "Two Ghosts." The song is not only lyrically pleasing but sonically masterful as well. Listen to this when you're driving, when you're sitting on the beach, when you're in a bad mood. Styles will ease your pain with this one.
Not every song by our favorite artists will be the best songs we've heard. It's ok to admit this. Trying new music is like trying new food, strange at first, but good for the soul in the long-run. Give it a shot.
