Through the years, numerous photos, videos, and stories have sent the student body buzzing with gossip. While we don’t have a Gossip Girl for Ole Miss, we do have Yik Yak and other social media to help tweet and voice the scandalous lives and times of the student body. Who can blame us? With the smartphones and social media outlets, circulating a picture of anything is easier than Jimmy John’s delivery. It’s safe to say that these incidents send social media into a frenzy. Unavoidably, it happens every semester, and it’s only a matter of time until that an unfortunate soul messes up this fall. So, before this fateful event happens, here is a recap of scandals of years past.
First, let’s throw it back to Fall of 2012. Right before recruitment, a picture of a girl with two guys in bed was taken. All three were extremely indecent to say the least, and assumptions were both made and confirmed as the picture spread like wildfire. Because Yik Yak wasn’t around, the news of its existence and the photo were circulated via text but soon reached Twitter by the end of the week.
Flash forward to Spring of 2013. A picture surfaces of a girl who’s legs and arms are covered in blood, while making out with her man on the discontinued Rebel Ride. Referred to as the infamous “bloody girl,” a tumble on the way back from The Square more closely resembled horror movie character Carrie. While originally posted on the long gone Twitter account, Hotty Toddy Makeout, the photo of the “Bloody Girl” gained infamy quickly, and even appeared on the Total Frat Move weekly “Fail Friday” post that next weekend.
Fall of 2013, the picture of the yellow Jeep crashed into The Corner Bar made a smashing impact. As Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat were flooded with pictures of the incident, they were usually accompanied by captions including spin-offs of popular songs such as “Wrecking Ball” and “I Love it.” Halloween closely followed the event, and the duo of The Yellow Jeep and The Corner were popular couples’ costume choice.
Spring of 2014 was cold and snowy, but things began to heat up as a snapchat appeared of a girl with an illegal substance on her chest, accompanied by a duck face. While the snapchat was not sent by her, it was screenshot-ed by a recipient who passed the photo around. As it turns out, the photo never ended up on any social media site, and its circulation slowed soon because it was not aired on social media .
As we wait with great anticipation for the newest incident for the fall of 2014, it’s best that we look back at scandals of the past and learn from them. We all know the rowdiness of the Grove and the Square can get the best of us sometimes. I mean who wouldn’t be of a sound mind after a couple of Miley Cyrus' at Funky’s? However, we all know the popular saying, “pictures or it didn’t happen,” so I’d like to leave you all with something to reflect on: if there’s no pictures, then it never happened.
Stay crazy Ole Miss.
