When I first heard ‘New Years Day’ I was surprised. I’ve always been a Taylor Swift fan and didn’t know how I had never heard this song before.
Sometimes her deluxe albums have songs the regular album doesn’t have so I just figured this was one of them. So I listened and appreciated the way her old music used to sound. A few days later I heard the song again in the car with my mom and she said, “Have you heard this new Taylor Swift song yet? She sang it on Jimmy Fallon last week and it’s my favorite from the new album."
I had no idea this was a new song from her. I’ve been so used to the pop punk songs that I just figured the soft, slow song days were over. I suppose she tried to make this style transition in the albums following Red. There was much discussion about the 1989 album sounding 'different' and even more talk about Reputation. As any loyal Taylor Swift fan, I've stood by her in her music changes but I have to admit, her old soft country style music was my favorite. New Years Day reflects her old music on point. Hearing this song made me realize the old Taylor isn't really dead. She's still in there somewhere.
I'm relieved knowing that the piano ballad days aren't really over yet. As I've come to grow to like Reputation, I feel like adding a mix of her styles in the future wouldn't hurt. Taylor Swift is a talented artist that can pull off pretty much any style, however her best songs really are the ones that come right from the heart. In New Years Day you can hear the same passion in her voice as she used to have singing songs like 'Ronan' and 'Back to December'.
New Years Day reminds me of the songs I used to cry and fall asleep to. Her music did that to you. Now it's just something to rock out to. However, New Years Day falls under the category that puts girls in their feels.
New Years Day showed me the old Taylor isn't really dead, and it gives me hope for the future.
