With New Year's right around the corner, I want everyone to know that is okay not to go through with your New Year's resolutions. While getting rid of your bad habits is a good thing, you do not have to wait until New Year's to break them. You can start a resolution any day of the year! Reach for your goals, but do not let waiting until January 1st hold you back. It is totally okay to try a New Year's Resolution and it is okay to fail as well.
1. Working Out
GiphyOn January 2nd, the gym is always packed. There is no treadmill available to run on, the weights are not on the racks, and the leg machines have lines of people waiting to use them. People try too much too fast and get burned out and by January 7th they have canceled their gym memberships. For the sake of people who actually work out (God bless them and their superpowers to do that), let's just stop pretending we will actually work out - or at least start small with some crunches in the comfort of our own home.
2. Eating Healthy
GiphyLet's be honest, eating healthy is a bore. I like vegetables as much as the next but that does not mean I want to eat salad every day all day. Junk food is fine in moderation! If you eat half a pizza and a slice of pie on December 31st and then on January you try to drastically change your diet to salmon and brussels sprouts, that diet will not last more than a week. Cutting your body from off all the processed sugars and carbohydrates cold turkey just gives a higher likelihood that you will relapse into your McDonald's apple pie addiction. Take it easy and start to eat things in moderation. Instead of eating a whole tray of cookies, have one. I promise you'll see a change from just doing that.
3. Kicking Those Bad Habits
GiphyBiting your nails, smoking, drinking, swearing, etc. are all bad habits we are guilty of. While ridding of those bad habits are a bad thing, waiting till the new year to do so is not. You can start anytime! On October 14th when you decide you do not want to watch as much television, just stop then! You shouldn't say, "Wow, I watch too much TV, next year I won't do that!" Instead, you should opt for stopping next week or the next day! While I commend anyone trying to quit a bad habit, waiting until the new year is almost a cop-out. Do it now!
4. Stop Drinking Caffeinated Beverages
This is one I will never promise because I LOVE COFFEE! Plenty of people want to quit drinking coffee, tea, energy drinks, soda, you name it, and that is okay! Just like any of these you can start anytime, it does not have to be on January 1st. The main arguments for wanting to quit these things are for health benefits and money. Well while a lot of those things are bad, drinking black coffee or tea straight with maybe a little honey is not all that bad for you. There are actually some health benefits like lowered rates of Alzheimers, depression and heart disease. Drinking sugary sodas, energy drinks or coffees are not good for you (I am guilty of this too, it is okay). Also, if it costs too much - stop going to Starbucks and drink your coffee at home!
5. Eating Out Less
GiphyTo this one, yes, I think many people should do a better job of eating in more to save some money but we do not need to cut it out all together. When making plans with friends, instead of suggesting that you go out to Olive Garden suggest making spaghetti at home. But when someone has a birthday, anniversary, special occasion or just plain asks to go out to lunch, don't deprive yourself of the delicious food and the social factor. Saving money on eating out when eating alone is a different thing but do not ruin friendships in the sake of saving a few bucks. As Marie-Antoinette once said, "let them eat cake"
6. Reading More
GiphyI love to read so I always advocate for others reading but for some people it is not a feasible option. We live in the age of Netflix, Movies, and TV binging. For some, it is hard to resist the temptations of watching another episode of 'The Office' just to pick up a book for a few minutes. As much as I like to read, I spend more time watching Netflix than I do flipping the page of a book. Let's be realistic, if reading is not your thing, that is okay. Reading can broaden your knowledge but so can watching Planet Earth on Netflix.
These 6 resolutions are some of the most popular ones in the United States but do not wait until New Year's to go through with them. It is okay to take a shot at them any time. It is also okay to fail at them. Making a change like that is not easy, so when you fall, get back up and try again.
