A New Resolution

Another year has dawned upon us. And so have the New Year’s resolutions. Whether it be to lose weight, travel more or just save more money, what is it about January 1 that makes everyone realize how much they need change in their lives? The holiday season is about thankfulness and enjoying the presence of loved ones, but as soon as the clock strikes midnight, we’re all making lists of what we don’t like about our lives.

What happened to just being content with the life we were given by God? If we truly believe that God has graciously given us the life that we live in Christ, and not just the good parts, then we should be thankful for it all.

Most believers can quote Paul's verse in Philippians 4 about being strengthened by Christ. However, the two verses before this one provide additional insight into Paul's happiness as a believer.

Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me. Philippians 4:11-13

Paul tells the believers in Philippi that no matter what situation they are in to be content.

We should be thankful for the numbers on the scale because God created our bodies exactly as they are.

We should be thankful for the zeros in our bank account because God promised to give us everything we need (not that we want), as long as we have faith.

I’m not saying that wanting a change in our lives is bad, don’t misunderstand me. But the premise behind the change is what needs to be examined.

When we make a new years resolution, we’re making a conscious decision about something we want to change in ourselves. However, the basis of the Christian belief system is the knowledge that we cannot change ourselves. We must rely on the power of God to make the change. It is not something we can do.

And I am not without fault. Constantly I find myself praying to God to make a change in my life but then I do not wait for that change to occur.

We ask Christ to come into our hearts so that His power will work in our lives. If we believe that the same God that created the universe and defeated death is the same one whose holy spirit lives within us, then we should have faith to give Him control of everything.

Trying to change ourselves without God is like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, it just doesn’t work.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33

If we're seeking to bring ourselves closer to Christ, then the change that God wants to occur will happen. In time.

So, for 2016, I’m not making a New Year’s resolution. I’m making a New Year's decision to give God all power over my life and, with that, I’ll become healthier, wealthier and a much better person. I invite you to join me.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
