Why I Made The Decision To Change My Name
Carrie Spillane

Coraline: I wasn't 'saddled' with anything. It's Coraline.

Wybie: Caroline what?

Coraline: Coraline. Coraline Jones.

Wybie: Hm. It's not real scientific, but I heard an ordinary name like Caroline can lead people to have ordinary expectations about a person

-Coraline.

Some people may be wondering why I am going by the name Carrie now. Since I have my username on most social media as Carrie. It is not because I hate my name my parents gave me. A lot of thought and consideration came out of changing my name. Though Caroline is more of a common name and people memorize it. It's always there on every key-chain and souvenir you come across. Honestly, who does not know the 1969 Neil Diamond' song Sweet Caroline bum, bum, bum? Caroline Kennedy? Caroline Flack? (Directioners know who she is). Or North & South Carolina? (close enough. You get my point). The simple answer is that I am honestly tired of my name being pronounced or spelled wrong. Yes. That is the honest answer. My legal name is Carolyn pronounced k AIR - uh - l in. I have tried to help people remember by saying "My name is Carolyn like Jermey Lin the basketball player. Also that he is Chinese American too." But, some people do not know who he is so it died quickly. Or "oh its Caro-LYN. Guess my parents wanted to keep part of the Asian lol" (I end up being the only one laughing).

I have decided to be called Carrie. It's way shorter and easier to remember. It will be more like a nickname than legally changing my name and all that jazz. I also admire a lot of people named Carrie like Carrie Chapman Catt, an American woman's suffrage leader who campaigned for the 19th Amendment. Carrie Underwood, an American country singer who won the fourth season of American Idol in 2005 and especially Carrie Fisher who is notoriously known as Princess Leia. Or fictional yet still favorable characters as Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City and Carrie White from the Carrie horror movie. Also when I changed all my names to carrie on as a play on word from carry on and Outer Space/Carry On is one of my favorite song from 5 Seconds of Summer aka 5SOS.

There are family and friends who still call me Carolyn correctly and you know who you are, and you can continue that because that is my name.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
