Retail. The job itself causes many mixed emotions; some people love it, some people hate it, and others are unbiased. I only worked in retail for a year, so I didn’t get to experience tons of crazy things, but I did have my fair share. Even though I was only in retail for a short time, customers have told me many, many things, and if you’ve ever worked retail, I’m sure you’ve heard these 10 things, too.
1. "It's not scanning, so it must be free!"
I can't tell you how many times I've heard this one. There are UPC codes on each clothing item that we can just key in manually...it's not free.
2. "It's almost closing time, the day is almost over for you!"
Not really...after we close I have to fold clothes, fix all of the displays, clean the bathrooms, and make sure everything is ready to go for the morning shift.
3. "It's such a shame that you're working on a Saturday!"
No days off in retail, ma'am.
4. "The size that I need is on the mannequin, can you take it off for me?"
Dressing and undressing the mannequins was the worst thing about working retail. You had to be extra careful when putting on the shirts or they would rip.
5. "How do you know you don't have it in the back?"
I live here.
6. "But I found this on the *insert percentage off here* rack!"
When somebody said this to me, 9 times out of 10 it was because it was on the wrong rack. I'd always look it up in the system and tell them that it was not 50% off, and they'd either be disappointed and put it back or demand to speak to a manager who'd tell them they exact same thing that I had said.
7. "I don't have the receipt, but I paid *insert price here* for it, can I get my money back?"
Without a receipt, there's nothing to prove that you paid that price for it. You can still return it, but without the receipt, you'll only be getting back what the item is currently on sale for.
8. "I'm never shopping here again!"
I can't tell you how many times I've heard this one. Even though they tell you they're never shopping with you again, they always come back within the next few days.
9. "This coupon only expired yesterday, am I still able to use it?"
No...it expired yesterday. The system will just say "coupon code invalid" when I try to ring it up.
10. "What do you mean my card declined? Let me speak to a manager!"
There's nothing that my manager or myself will be able to do for you.
