Taylor Swift is far from being underrated. Girls idolize her, boys fantasize over her, and she continues to snag Grammy after Grammy. However, this A-List star still surprisingly released some hidden gems that never received the same recognition as "You Belong With Me," "We Are Never Getting Back Together," or one of Taylor's other 100 top hits. It's a true test of Taylor Swift fandom to see if you can recognize any of these songs which have managed to lie low on the music radar. Whether they didn't make an album cut or never garnered as much attention as they deserved, stop listening to Red or 1989 on continuous loop, and immerse yourself into these hits which will instantly become your newest obsession.
1. "Sweeter Than Fiction"
The song definitely favors the more pop-y sound of Taylor Swift. Released for the movie One Chance, "Sweeter Than Fiction" is only two-years-old and was released during Taylor's height of fame. Somehow, it never managed to gain as much attention as expected. Be careful though, once you get hooked, you'll constantly be humming the melody.
2. "Dark Blue Tennessee"
Throwing it back to old-school, country Taylor Swift, this beautiful song shows her amazing ability to create catchy, slow ballads. Following a story of a heartbroken couple, Swift captures the classical country style with this melodic masterpiece.
3. "Ronan"
You'll for sure be brought to tears with this song. After listening, the lyrics will leave you feeling somewhat hollow - in the best way, if that's possible? Swift wrote the song after she read a post by a mom who lost her three-year-old son to cancer. Taylor collaborated with the mom to create this beautiful song in his memory. All the funds of the song went to Cancer research. "Ronan" is not only a beautiful song but carries a beautiful message with it.
4. "Brought Up That Way"
Another one of Taylor Swift's tear jerkers for sure. Following the story of a girl named Emily and her dad, the ending will be sure to capture your heart. The song was never released which explains the pitched quality on all videos of the song. If you can ignore the pitched audio, the story itself shows how beautiful this song would have been if released.
5. "Lucky You"
Any true T-Swift fan would easily recall that this was Taylor's first song ever recorded at age 12. The character, Lucky, in the song symbolically represents the outcast feeling Taylor felt as a middle schooler. Already at age 12, Taylor began using music as her catharsis. The song definitely deserves respect as a musical representation of the star's creative roots.
6. "Permanent Marker"
The psycho, ex-girlfriend persona came out way before "Blank Space" with this song. The song playfully shows the jealous, ex-girlfriend rage after a breakup. Add this to your post-breakup playlist because Taylor's given us one more tune to help mend a broken heart.
7. "Nevermind"
Another song Taylor never decided to release. "Nevermind" falls right into place with the classic Taylor Swift genre: a song about a boy, a girl falling in love with that boy, and the girl having to keep it a secret. Another relatable, tragic song Taylor has given us to keep on repeat late at night.
8. "Thug Story"
Taylor's alter-ego emerges in this song of lyrical brilliance. Sadly, this was a talent that Taylor, or shall I say "T-Swizzy", never continued to pursue. Definitely one of Taylor's more underrated productions.
