Just finished the last season of your favorite show on Netflix? Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. You’re left feeling as if a piece of you is missing, and wondering if you’ll ever find another show to fill the void. Fear not, because I’m here to help! I’m a pro when it comes to Netflix, and I figured it was time I used this talent for the greater good.
So, if you’re in need of a new show to binge-watch, here is a list of some of my favorites:
1. The Office
In addition to being laugh-out-loud hilarious, this show has plot lines that are able to both break your heart and fill you with glee. You fall in love with the characters so quickly that you can’t help but be enthralled with the goings-on of their seemingly mundane lives. I often hear that people have a hard time making it past the first season of this show, and all I can say to them is to please trust me. I promise that if you push through you won’t be disappointed; this is easily one of my favorite shows of all time. It’s so good I’ve even re-watched the whole series! And if that isn’t convincing enough, I’ve got three words for you: Michael Gary Scott.
2. Parks and Recreation
I’m ashamed to admit that I was quick to judge when I first heard of Parks and Rec. I thought for sure that another mockumentary wouldn’t come close to being as good as The Office, and refused to watch altogether. Finally, I broke down and started the first episode, and I have never been so happy to be proven wrong. I was pleasantly surprised to find that a show about the trials and tribulations of Leslie Knope and her coworkers in the Parks Department could be as funny as it is. The characters are different than anything you’ve seen before, and their wacky personalities make it easy to get attached. And if you’re like me, you’ll finish the series wishing that you could move to Pawnee and be friends with them all.
3. Arrested Development
Let me just say that this show is not for everyone. It is a show full of smart humor where if you don’t pay close attention you’ll miss out on the joke. That being said, I think it is hands-down one of the funniest shows I’ve ever seen. The show follows the Bluth family, which is a clan full of unusual characters that are all a little messed up in their own way. Even though most of them are actually pretty terrible people, their antics and all-around obliviousness sort of force you to enjoy them. So yes, the humor on this show is the opposite of obvious. However, once you catch on, it’s absolutely hysterical.
4. Parenthood
You basically can’t go wrong with any show starring Lauren Graham (ever heard of the blessing called Gilmore Girls?). Though this show isn’t classified as a comedy like the others on this list, that doesn’t mean you should write it off – this show is amazing. It revolves around a large extended family, and all the drama that ensues as they try to handle the curveballs life throws at them. I don’t consider myself to be a crier when it comes to TV/films, but this show made me bawl my eyes out on multiple occasions (from both sadness and happiness). You would think it’d be hard to become so emotionally attached to such a long list of characters, but they’re all so wonderful that loving them comes naturally. I promise it isn’t a sappy drama where pretty music plays as they all learn a life lessons like they do on Full House. This show is down-to-earth and it is real, which makes me love it all the more.
These are just a few of my favorite shows on Netflix, and I hope that you enjoy them as much as I have. However, if none of these float your boat, here's a list of a few more that you might enjoy:
- Bob's Burgers
- Freaks and Geeks
- New Girl
- Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
- It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Happy Netflix-ing!
