Today we're going to talk about one of the best fictional characters of all time: Luna Lovegood. If you don't already know who Luna is, she is a character in the "Harry Potter" series who I think deserves a little more attention. I adore Luna Lovegood. I think she is incredibly under rated, but also everything I want in a friend, along with being the kind of person I aspire to be. Granted, I'd like to spend a little less time searching for relics of fictional creatures, but I aspire to be the kind of positive force that Luna is.
I recently reread all the "Harry Potter" books, and while Luna has always been one of my favorite characters, she stands out to me more than ever now. I think that what makes Luna so unique is her ability to see the world in a different light-- granted, she does believe in all sorts of nonsense, but at her very core, she's incredibly intelligent, thoughtful, positive, and altogether a true friend.
Luna, who is often seen as the one character that doesn't quite have a grasp on reality, is actually pretty bright and inciteful. She doesn't see the world in black and white. She doesn't get angry when other students pick on her, calling her "Loony Lovegood" and hiding her things around the castle. Instead, she brushes it off and focuses on the bright side. She doesn't dwell on problems that would get us, everyday people, down and she just looks for the positive in every situation.
However, no matter what life throws at Luna, she fights back. That is something that I really admire about her. While her personality seems so mellow and naive, she isn't afraid to take a stand. In every book that Luna is a part of, she goes out of her way to help Harry fight against evil, even though she isn't a part of the trio. In the 5th book, Luna travels to the Ministry of Magic with Harry, Ron, Hermione, Neville, and Ginny to fight off death eaters and attempt to save Sirius Black. In the 6th book, she is one of the only DA members to defend Hogwarts when the death eaters invade. Then, in the 7th she rebels against the Carrows and death eaters at Hogwarts so much that she is taken prisoner while on the Hogwarts Express.
Moreover, Luna is both the kind of friend I want to be and the friend I want to have. She's never judgemental and she always sees the best in people. Perhaps because she doesn't have many friends, Luna is fiercely protective of the people that are closest to her. One thing that really stands out to me about Luna is how she has the painting of her, Harry, Ron, Hermione, Neville, and Ginny on her ceiling with gold words around them saying "friends friends friends." Luna is the kind of person who truly loves her friends, and while they don't always appreciate her as much as they should, she's always there for them. Heck, Luna was even taken captive by death eaters because she supported Harry while he was on the run.
I think it's about time we give Luna Lovegood a little more credit. She's a fantastic person, witch, and friend. If the world had more Lunas in it, everything would be a little brighter. We should all be a little more "Loony."
