Goblets of water slide
down crested green leaves
drizzled with specks of ice.
Thick, brown trunks reach toward the sky
topped with long and lonely branches.
Red and yellow paper thin spades
quiver in October winds.
Icy tendrils blow from the mountain
canyon, branches shivering.
Tiny flakes of snow float down
to the hardening ground below,
landing on copper daisies
dangling from their dying stems.
Green grass fades into
translucent brown as the setting
sun moves farther out of sight.
The paper white moon rises from
sleep as the sun disappears
in the hopes of a short winter.
