Natural Hair: The New Beauty Trend

I am a girl who, like many others with naturally curly hair, has jumped on the bandwagon of the wash-and-go Afro. I've recently been loving my curl pattern and, more importantly, I’ve been loving the way I feel every time I rock this style. There’s something empowering and self-assuring about wearing your hair naturally, even if you have to manipulate it a little to create different curls.

Natural hair is a trend that has recently garnered a lot of attention, especially within the black community. For the wearer of this newly accepted hairstyle, it can mean a much simpler and healthier hair routine, or more importantly, a general self-acceptance.

For a long time, our society has strictly followed a narrow-minded definition on what beauty is. And as a result of this, many women felt it necessary to change in order to appeal to society’s preconceived view of this beauty. Now, there has been a shift in perception, and it has become popular for girls, and even guys, with naturally curly hair to embrace their curl pattern.

“I love the bounce and volume it naturally has and the different textured curls,” said AJ Sagar, a rising sophomore at TCNJ.

One of the greatest aspects to the natural hair trend is, in fact, its versatility, which is probably why it seems to be a trend that is taking over the world. While studying abroad in London, I’ve spotted natives and foreigners alike rocking their curls, which of course reminded me of the large population of TCNJ students who also do the same. Girls can be seen with a wild Afro, twist-outs, Bantu knots, beautiful ombrés… the list goes on. But like I said, this is more than just another fad.

TCNJ graduate and style blogger Ashley Hutchinson said, “I chose to go natural because I wanted healthy hair and to show the beauty of my natural hair. Wearing my natural hair is symbolic to my self-acceptance because it’s a part of me that I have grown to love.”

Self-acceptance is totally redefining today's standards of beauty. Regardless if this au-naturel style is here to stay, it's refreshing to know that people everywhere are embracing this self-love look!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
