Mondays, normally that dreaded first day of the work or school week also coincide with many holidays, however the most fitting holiday to be occurring on Monday, March 12th, 2018 is National Nap Day. Sleeping being by far one of the most popular pastimes of both myself and my fellow students and the fact that this year the holiday falls during our spring break means we can celebrate one of the greatest holidays ever created in style. I don't know about anyone else, but I plan on staying in my pajamas and slippers all day while I kick back and relax.
We all know what its like to try and balance classes, studying, socializing, adulting, and sleeping, in general, is a challenge in itself. Unfortunately, sleep ends up being the most neglected within the balancing act. Classes are non-negotiable, as is studying, and without taking out the trash or do the laundry every once in a while it is unlikely the relationship between you and the people you live with is going to decline. Socializing happens organically its extremely hard to avoid at times if you are actively participating in class, working in a study group, or quite possibly trying to do laundry. So, sleep loses in the long run.
Life as a college student means being constantly on the go, and although I know of plenty of people who can survive with less than 6 hours of sleep a night. Although many of this magical population who seem to never sleep may rely on energy drinks or caffeine there are surprisingly a few natural "energizer bunnies" who lack the basic drive to sleep in general. I, on the other hand, require at the very least 5 hours to be able to function at my normal capacity, and at least one 20 minute nap a day.
Every time I sleep or nap it's like pressing a factory reset button. Coming back from a class and taking a 20 minute, or sometimes a 2-hour nap is often times the difference between my day being productive or a waste. Its been this way since I was in high school because after my nap I would have more energy to take care of whatever mountain of homework I had that day and thus, the habit has stuck.
National Nap Day, is going to be the best Monday of the year but, there is no reason as to why every day can’t be Nap Day. It is easy enough to work in a 20-minute nap into a busy schedule, if I can do it then anyone can. Plus when you consider the benefits of napping, there really isn't any reason not to. Maintaining productivity, relieving stress, and reducing boredom are all challenges college students face, that napping can help alleviate.
