Why Smash Mouth wants you to hit the ground running:
1. "Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me. I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed. She was looking kinda dumb with her finger and her thumb in the shape of an "L" on her forehead."
Often, it is the ignorant who believe that everyone else is "dumb." They mock their enemies but don't recognize their own folly. Make all of your decisions with knowledge and discernment, but be careful to scorn.
2. "Well, the years start coming and they don't stop coming. Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running. Didn't make sense not to live for fun. Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb. So much to do, so much to see - so what's wrong with taking the backstreets?"
What we have been taught growing up, both through the education system and respective cultures, should be viewed through a critical lens. Just because you were traditionally educated does not mean you have nothing more to learn. Perhaps there is more to life than what we've been taught. Who is to say that a traditional lifestyle is any better than living in the "backstreets"?
3. "Hey now, you're an all-star, get your game on, go play. Hey now, you're a rock star, get the show on, get paid. And all that glitters is gold, only shooting stars break the mold."
Contrary to what you may have grown up believing, the world isn't only created by "all-stars." You can also be a driver of change. You can approach life with the confidence of a rock-star and "break the mold" of seemingly shatterproof cultural constructs.
4. "It's a cool place, and they say it gets colder. You're bundled up now, wait 'til you get older. But the meteor men beg to differ. Judging by the hole in the satellite picture."
I offer two interpretations
- Metaphorical: Life will always have its difficulties.
- Literal: Global Warming.
5. "The ice we skate is getting pretty thin. The waters getting warm, so you might as well swim. My world's on fire, how 'bout yours? That's the way I like it and I'll never get bored."
In life's harshness and difficulty, instead of falling through thin ice, we should "jump in" and learn from trial. If we never had obstacles, we would never grow... and wouldn't that be boring?
6. "Somebody once asked, 'could I spare some change for gas? I need to get myself away from this place,' I said, 'Yep! What a concept! I could use a little fuel myself, and we could all use a little change.'"
In life, we must bear each other's burdens and allow others to bear ours. This can be tangible by means of literal selfless service (I.e loaning money). However, it can also be emotional— we must, metaphorically, "fuel" one another up to ignite necessary change!
This is simply my analysis of Smash Mouth's 'All-Star,' but I encourage you to interpret it through your own lens! (After all, it seems as though Smash Mouth would want you to). Happy voting!
