My Thoughts On: On-Campus Dining

Eating healthy is hard enough, but somehow the school cafeteria makes it even harder.

My Thoughts On: On-Campus Dining

When it comes to eating healthy, college-aged students aren't known for having the best habits. Maybe it's the absence of concern for what we put into our bodies, or maybe its because of the options available to us (or lack there of). Pizza, cheeseburgers, soda, and unlimited dessert--all staples in most college dining halls. But what you won't find an abundance of? Food that can truly be deemed healthy (or edible).

Sure, there might be steamed (probably once frozen) veggies offered as a side for the chicken nuggets for lunch, but most likely they are slathered in butter or margarine to cover up the fact that they are cooked to the point of being the consistency of warm play-dough.

It seems the only option for a health-conscious student is the salad bar. Salads are nice and all, but they by no means make up a complete diet. I'll be the first to admit that my school has an excellent salad bar, with plenty of topping choices to keep the salads from getting too boring after eating them day after day. But other than the salad bar, there is next to nothing that I would eat if I had any other option. So I'm forced to make a decision--eat nothing but salad and constantly feel hungry, or eat a salad with a side of pizza or if I'm lucky undercooked mystery meat thats supposed to be baked chicken.

(actual chicken from my school's dining hall)

I understand that preparing a very large amount of food for an even larger population of hungry students on a budget is an incredibly difficult task, but its not impossible. Yes, there are other options such as cooking your own meals, or eating off campus, and these would be great options that I would gladly utilize if I a) had the time and b) had tons of extra cash lying around.

Meal plans are expensive. Very expensive actually, and most schools require that you have some form of meal plan if you live on campus. So where is all that money going? Each semester we pay a large sum of money solely for the on-campus dining plan, and I think we deserve better.

We deserve options--healthy ones.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
