One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone looks at another college student and says, "So why did you choose that major?" Or how about, "You know you won't make any money with that major right?" First, not only is this incredibly rude and hurtful but also, it is his/her choice to do whatever he/she pleases to do with their lives. You are responsible for one person and that is yourself. What you choose to do is what makes you happy, what your passion is, or what you feel like you want to spend the rest of your life doing.
For me, I changed my major the second day of school my freshman year. I knew that nursing was not what I was meant to be and social work was what I was meant to do. A lot of people that I meet in school have asked me why? Why did you change your major? If I am being honest, I feel like social work is where I can personally help people the most. My goal is to one day become a therapist. I want to see a change in the world, make a true difference. I absolutely love my social work classes. I know that I am in the field I am meant to be in and it brings me joy.
I know too that I am not the only person who faces this problem. Too many times I have been waiting on classes to hear conversations buzzing around me about how one major is better than another or how one field is more important. That is not true. All the majors at a university are important. Whether you are in business and help keep our cooperations working, education and helping children become educated, nursing saving lives, art making our world a more beautiful place, music bringing people entertainment, religious studies, criminal justice, political science, and everything in between. You are needed in our world to help it go round. You are appreciated. And I especially appreciate you and all you do.
So the next time someone puts you down, discredits what you do, makes it seem like you don't work as hard as other people...just remember they don't know what truly goes into your major. They don't know why you chose what you did. They don't have to live your life. You are the one that is going to be doing your job every single day of your life. Be happy for yourself. Find something you love, chase after it, change your major multiple times. Because I am sure when you find the right one(s) you will truly be content.
