It seemed I had still been settling into my second year at Syracuse University by the time fashion week came around this fall. I was suddenly in the city with a good friend of mine, spending our evening mapping out the routes to the fashion shows we would be attending the next day.
After bettering our understandings of the subway system, we grabbed some dinner and headed back to her apartment—where we then stayed awake with excitement until about 2 a.m.
So yeah, with the mixture of just settling into college, my school workload, and having traveled to the city with very little sleep, I was exhausted the next morning. I woke up after about four hours of sleep, got dressed in my all-black attire to follow the backstage professionalism rules, and headed to the subway for fashion week. I was extremely excited.
I dressed for New York Fashion Week last spring as well, but only did four shows. I learned so much and it was such an exciting endeavor, but I was even more excited for these upcoming couple of days. My schedule for Friday ran from 7:30 a.m. until 11:00 p.m., where I would be at Spring Studios backstage at five shows to dress models for the runway shows I would be working.
The next day encased one show as I set my trip to head back to school for right after that show.
The day went absolutely amazing. This year encompassed learning the process of developing such various shows with entirely different styles. Due to the contrasts in shows, here's the breakdown of each one that I dressed for this fall:
Cushnie's show was overall extremely elegant, with a flowing spring/summer color palette that flowed throughout the entire show. With the bright colors and beautiful cream tones, the collection looked effortless and was truly inspiring to watch as a fashion design major.
Concept Korea was very streetwear-inspired but had a seamless, elegant theme to it. The clothing was very simplistic, yet acted as dressed-up street style. Each outfit paired perfectly together and showed that the statement of "less is more" is valid in collections like this one. Simplicity was at the forefront of this show, and it was executed flawlessly.
The Parsons MFA collection had extremely, and I mean extremely, different styles showcased within it. With multiple Parsons graduate school fashion designers, each designers vision stood prominently within each set of looks. From fishnet with elegant wiring details to large plush coats with vibrant, artsy colors, I loved being able to watch all of these designers come together to display their outstanding collections.
Custo Barcelona's collection was very vibrant with pops of metallic colors, pinks, and golds. It was a very fun collection to view, as each look correlated with one another, but all had a different touch to them. Working for Custo Dalmau's (The designer of Custo Barcelona) fall/winter collection last spring was also a very fun experience, so it was exciting to see what his creativity would spark in this spring/summer collection.
Michael Costello's show was extremely enticing. All of his spring/summer looks were striking with the use of pinks and metallics, flowing dresses, and bodysuits. There was so much vibrancy in the colors of his collection, and everyone seemed to love each of the pieces.
The Blonds did an absolutely amazing job with their show this fall, as their collaboration with Disney Villains did not deter them from sticking with their per-usual striking, enticing, very detailed, and absolutely beautiful garments. Each piece was distinct enough to determine which Disney Villain was being portrayed, yet still acted as gorgeous garments that could be worn on elegant, high-fashion occasions.
This show left me extremely inspired, as the amount of decadent detail in the embroidery, feathering of the coats, and even the hair, nails, and makeup were prominent.
I must say, after viewing such beautiful and vastly different collections for this fall's spring/summer fashion week, there is no even-draw to my favorite show. Although, when aligning my personal design style with the shows portrayed and determining what inspired me the most, I must say The Blonds surpassed my expectations with their powerful runway show.
With such a diverse cast, the various model walks—with some models dancing and having dramatic poses, and the integration of various celebrities, this show was a 10/10 for me.
As this past Wednesday was sadly the end of the SS19 season of fashion week, I cannot wait for next season to deliver many more inspiring collections.
