My favorite show, The Vampire Diaries ended on March 10th 2017. A show that I have been watching since freshman year of high school. For eight seasons this series was full of ups and downs and I know this seems a little late, but I really wanted to express my love/hate relationship with this show.
Firstly, I did love this show, when I first binge-watched the first two seasons on a sick day of freshman year, I couldn't stop watching it after that. Pretty soon my best friend Agapi started watching it and I had someone to fangirl with me. But after eight incredible, disappointing, and intense seasons, it's finally over.
I want to start with what I loved most about this show, I mean isn't that why I am writing this article? The answer is yes.
The story starts off with Stefan, and if you don't know who he is, he is pictured below. The story starts off with him coming back to his hometown, well it was his hometown in 1864 before he was turned into a vampire, hence the title "The Vampire Diaries." He came back for a girl, a girl he wants to meet and fall in love with.
The reason he wants to fall in love with the girl, Elena Gilbert, is because she is an exact replica of a girl that was also a vampire in 1864. The girl who turned him into a vampire, Katherine Pierce.
Yeah, complicated. It gets even more complicated when Damon, Stefan's older brother comes to the same town looking for Katherine, because he is love with her, and Stefan came after Elena because he was in love with her. And Katherine and Elena are twins, the correct term is Doppelganger.
Yeah, that would be my face too right now reading this. By the way, that is Damon Salvatore.
The show gets even better, the only criticism I have for season one through is all the deaths. Elena is human, she looses so many people. For a human to lose her adopted parents, her birth parents and so many friends over a course of five years is inhumanly possible. No one, at least no one I know if can suffer that kind of pain and come out still somewhat happy.
Damon eventually falls in love with Elena in season three who is dating Stefan. This creates this epic love triangle between the three of them and that is what I think made the show exciting. I personally was always rooting for Damon and Elena, and I would get really angry when Elena kept going back and forth between the two of them.
If we are being honest here, I used to have the biggest crush on Damon Salvatore, but I got over that in season six, when the actress Nina Dobrev left the show to pursue other opportunities.
That's when the crush vanished because one, the show wasn't on for about half a year after that, and also I think I liked the idea of their epic love story instead of Damon himself. So yes, Elena did pick Damon. She delivered an amazing speech to him and he cut her off with an amazing kiss.
See? That is pretty epic! Anyway, during season six Nina Dobrev (Elena) left, leaving Damon to fend for himself. Season six, seven and most of season eight were completely Elenaless, At first, I didn't mind because I was frustrated with Elena, but by season seven I really started to miss her. I mean Damon didn't have anyone after that and that completely broke his heart. Which broke my heart! Because I was so in love with all these characters, whatever they felt I felt too.
What frustrated me most about this series was the fact that it was almost promised that by season eight Nina would come back to finish off the series for good. But she didn't... Until the last episode of season eight.
The series had come so long from season one, and it just wrapped up so quickly I didn't know what to think of it. I was hoping for a big spectacular ending that concluded the love that will forever be Elena and Damon. Also, the conclusion of the other main characters like Caroline and Stefan! Who never ended up together, by the way, Stefan died and left Elena, Damon and everyone else alone. When Damon and Elena died it was more they all united with their family in heaven, then found each other.
Because Elena left, the show became more about the love between two brothers, than two brothers in love with the same girl.
This gif is how the show ended, Elena got reunited with her family, and Damon got reunited with her brother.
This article was mostly me venting about my love/hate relationship for this show, mostly love I promise. I love this show, I am just sad about how it ended so quickly, I just wanted and needed a slower and more conclusive ending.
