Hello! This week I am following a theme set by my fellow group members in the LTU Odyssey Team. We are to write about our favorite movie! The movie that I will be focusing on in this article is "Interstellar" because I become inspired every time watch it. This article is not a short explanation of the movie and it's plot but is my reaction, feelings, and opinion of the film. I will give spoiler warnings if I do move onto a specific event within the film.
As some of you may know, I am a very over-analytical person. Most of my friends and family understand that after watching a movie I will usually run through the plot over and over in my head, especially if it is a movie I really enjoyed. I am usually quiet until someone starts discussing the movie and then I will chime in and never stop talking about it! This occurs much more often with "Sci-Fi" films where they usually press the ideas of space exploration and crazy futuristic scenarios.
"Interstellar" was one of the few movies that I actually watched by myself. It was a bright and warm day during the summer after I graduated high school. Ironically, I spent most of the early afternoon in my room looking for "Interstellar". I had interest in the movie but couldn't make enough time to actually sit down and watch it until that point. I found it and began watching it. Before I knew it, three hours had gone by. I was sitting there in my room silent but inspired. The movie did not go after ideas that were not so unrealistic that it felt cheesy and when the plot did move into odd scenarios it did so in such a manner to not shatter the viewers immersion.
WARNING: SPOILERS
One of the places that the movie struck my emotions was the idea that our children and future generations could no longer live on Earth because of our ignorance to how we affect nature as a technologically advanced society. Scenes where children were suffering because of the dust storms and hot weather moved me and kept me interested in the plot.
Later on, the movie plays around with idea and nature of gravity. As the main characters visit multiple worlds, they considered little of the effects that gravity of a close black hole would have on them, specifically in the aspect of time. This black hole was considered a "Gentle Giant"; in short, a "Gentle Giant" is a black hole that is old and massive but does not tear things apart as they enter them. In current science, we know that both space and time are affected by gravity. This movie takes this to an extreme with the setting of second half of the film. Visiting one the worlds would have greater repercussions than they initially thought. I was aware of this concept, but seeing it in this extreme situation blew me away. This very moment peaked my curiosity and only inspired me even more to look into the physics behind it.
END OF SPOILERS
The emotion of each character was well played and the design of the film and graphics was absolutely amazing. This movie always reminds me that one day we will be able to reach the distant worlds and places. I hope reaching these places is for the sake of exploration and not purely for survival of the human race like most Sci-Fi movies depict! Watching movies like Interstellar always re-inspire me to push through with my intentions of studying physics and astronomy! Thank you very much for reading my article!
