A couple of weeks ago I did an article about two of the most powerful boybands. But now its time for me to make a challenge. This article will feature my favorite albums of the '90s, from 1990 to 1999. I killed myself going through some of the best albums and deciding which ones were the best. Some years will feature multiple albums for one year so be prepared. This is my personal choice, so feel free to agree and disagree and add some of your favorites. Well... here goes nothing
Depeche Mode, "Violator" (1990)
I looked at the year 1990, and I could only find a couple of albums that i could consider my favorite. This is one of them. The English band Depeche Mode released this gem on March 19th, 1990. Its electronic sound introduced to a new wave of music that was common in the 80s, but would evolve in the 90s. "Personal Jesus" and "Enjoy the Silence' are considered one of the bands biggest hit singles. If you are into electronic music, I definitely recommend this album
Mariah Carey, "Mariah Carey"
Oh Mariah! The debut album that would introduce the seven-octave vocalist to the world at the young age of 20. Her debut single, "Vision of Love", would showcase the Long Islanders talent, and have many of us trying to hit her whistle register. With other hits like "Someday" and "Love Takes Time", Mariah would let the world know that she was here to stay.
Nirvana, "Nevermind" (1991)
Get ready for some grunge!
This masterpiece released by the Seattle band Nirvana left a lasting impact in music history. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" became the national anthem to all young teens in the 90s. It would launch Nirvana into superstardom. Kurt Cobain became an icon to them, its too bad that we can never hear more material from him.
Pearl Jam, "Ten"
Another album that would change the course of another band. Pearl Jam's success would come with the new lead singer Eddie Vedder, and with hits like "Even Flow" and "Jeremy", and themes like depression and abuse, Ten would influence a generation like Nevermind.
U2, "Achtung Baby"
Next to The Joshua Tree, this is one of my favorite U2 albums. Released as a result of the reunification of Germany, Achtung Baby would score big with the hit "One". Its like the 90s version of "Imagine", that leads to a song of peace.
Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Blood Sugar Sex Magik"
Different from their early work, Blood Sugar Sex Magik featured more heavy metal. And who can forget "Give It Away", and seeing all of the members of Red Hot Chili Peppers dancing around in their underwear. But it's not about the underwear, it's about the music. And this album set the bar for this group for years to come.
Michael Jackson, "Dangerous"
After parting ways with Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson would release Dangerous and would preach topics of race and poverty, like "Black or White". Or we can talk about "Remember the Time", its iconic music video, and just how freaking awesome the song is! Though bad times would come in Jackson's way after the albums release, it is still considered one of his best works.
(1992) I'm so sorry for this, but I really couldn't find an album from this year that I could say is a favorite. So please send albums my way in the comments!
Whitney Houston, "The Bodyguard Soundtrack" (1993)
Terrible movie, phenomenal soundtrack. Whitney Houston took a country song and made it her own. "I Will Always Love You" dominated charts all over the world, and the soundtrack sold millions because of it! I will always love this album, just like I will always love Whitney Houston.
Eric Clapton, "Unplugged"
An instant classic by a classic legend. Performing his greatest work unplugged, Eric Clapton left his mark in the '90s just like he did in any other year before.
Janet Jackson, "janet."
The sexual side of Janet was unleashed. "That's The Way Love Goes" and the hot song "If", showed the Janet was not afraid of showing off her sexual nature to the world.
Liz Phair, "Exile in Guyville"
Literally such an underrated album! Liz Phair doesn't get enough credit these days, and I believe that this album showed just how badass she can be, and would lead to other artist like Sheryl Crowe and Alanis Morissette.
Green Day, "Dookie" (1994)
Punk music just got even better. The third album by Green Day would receive such acclaim with songs like "Basket Case" and "When I Come Around". I always put this album ahead of their others, even American Idiot. I always appreciated the early works of Green Day.
Oasis, "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" (1995)
Anyway... Here's "Wonderwall."
The Smashing Pumpkins, "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness"
Oh my this album! I don't think its just the songs that made me love this album, its the music videos! Watch "Tonight, Tonight", it is beautiful!
Alanis Morissette, "Jagged Little Pill"

I could write a whole article about how much I love this album. But I'll keep it simple, it was a young Canadian woman who was angry. But Alanis had a voice that needed to be heard, and "You Oughta Know" topped it all. She also included songs about love like "Head Over Feet", and an ironic song called "Ironic". From start to finish this album is perfection!
Mariah Carey, "Daydream"
I considered this Mariah's best album. "One Sweet Day" left an impact on Billboard history, and "Fantasy" and "Always Be My Baby" are still loved to this day. Its another album that is perfect from start to finish.
TLC, "CrazySexyCool"
This album... just listen to this album and you will know why I love it, I guarantee it! The iconic "Waterfalls" is included on this album, with other hits like "Red Light Special".
Michael Jackson, "History: Past, Present, and Future, Book 1"
Combined as a greatest hits album, Michael also recorded new material and released it in this double album set. Like Dangerous, the albums theme include environmental and racial issues, while also expressing his anger against the media with "Scream", which features his sister Janet Jackson.
2Pac, "Me Against The World"
Its one of those albums that, even if you aren't a fan of hip-hop, you need to listen to. 2Pac released personally his best material in this album (stay tuned for 96) with "Dear Mama" taking the prize as the best song off this album.
Fugees, "The Score" (1996)
One of my favorite hip-hop albums of all time! A cover of "Killing Me Softly with His Song", "Fu-Gee-La", "Ready or Not", "Zealots" this album is fantastic! Its sad that they would break-up after this album
Celine Dion, "Falling Into You"
I needed to have Celine on here. As much as her next album was even better, Falling Into You has my one true weakness to stop everything that I am doing and sing for my life, "Because You Loved Me"
Spice Girls, "Spice"
I would've been a dead man if I did not include this album, but yes The Spice Girls do deserve some recognition for making another British Invasion with "Wannabe".
2Pac, "All Eyez on Me"
Probably one of the greatest hip-hop/rap albums of all time! "How Do U Want It" and "California Love" dominated the rap scene and just heighten the success of 2Pac. Though he was tragically taken from us, this living rap legend still lives on with his fantastic music.
The Notorious B.I.G, "Life After Death" (1997)
Truly life after death, this album left a lasting legacy on the career of Biggie Smalls. People still go crazy over "Hypnotize" and "Mo Money Mo Problems" and its upsetting that we can't here more from him.
Radiohead, "OK Computer"
No words... Just... It is beautiful! Its experimental sound helped further the success of Radiohead, and is one of the best alternative albums out there.
Janet Jackson, "The Velvet Rope"
This is the more personal side of Janet. Using themes of sexuality, depression, and abuse, Janet created what I consider the precursor to Beyonce's self-titled album in 2013. Its different from her earlier works, but it is truly something special.
Celine Dion, "Let's Talk About Love"
Let's talk about love indeed. Let's talk about how the best selling albums of all time included the monster hit "My Heart Will Go On". Like her heart, this album goes down as one of the greatest if the 90s.
Shania Twain, "Come On Over"
Probably one of the best country albums to this day, Shania dominated almost the end of the 90s with this album. "Man! I Feel Like A Woman", "That Don't Impress Me Much", "From This Moment On", and "You're Still The One". Shania went all out with this album, and it took over like wildfire.
Lauryn Hill, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" (1998)
This album set the bar for future female rappers and hip-hop artist. After breaking away from the Fugees, Lauryn released an album of her own. And lets just say, its pretty damn good. "Doo Wop (That Thing)", "Ex-Factor", this woman did it all. I really wish we could get more songs out of her.
Cher, "Believe"
Cher can pretty much do anything in any year, and she will still get acclaim for it. Just look at Believe, it brought Cher back on to the music scene. Bless this woman.
Backstreet Boys, "Millennium" (1999)
Look at my boybands article and you'll know why its a favorite.
Eminem, "The Slim Shady LP"
"Hi my name is", this album helped launched Eminem's career and made him once of the greatest rappers of this generation.
TLC, "FanMail"
With hits like "No Scrubs" and "Unpretty", how could this not be the best album?
Santana, "Supernatural"
How many past artist can make a comeback in the 90s? Carlos Santana released his best album and his song with Rob Thomas, "Smooth" dominated until 2000. Even today when you hear that guitar riff, you still go nuts!
Britney Spears, "...Baby One More Time"
The debut album of Britney Spears, and the debut of the most marvelous career of the young teenager from Louisiana. "Baby One More Time", "Sometimes", "From the Bottom of my Broken Heart", it was released during the time where teen pop was the thing, and Spears out shined all teen pop artist. To this day, and even after all the horrible things she has been through, Britney has become a living legend in the pop world.
Christina Aguilera, "Christina Aguilera"
Yet another artist that dominated the teen pop scene. Like Mariah, Christina debut her fantastic vocal range that took over the music world. "Genie in a Bottle", "What A Girl Wants", "I Turn to You", it was an album that would jump start the career for the former Mickey Mouse Club singer.
Ricky Martin, "Ricky Martin"
Without Ricky Martin, the latin-pop fever that spread across the United States probably wouldn't have happened. It was this album, and a performance at the Grammys, that led him to new heights and bringing in such other latin artist like Enrique Iglesias, Jennifer Lopez, and Shakira. He was truly "Livin La Vida Loca".
