I have come to terms with the fact that no matter which career path I choose, I will not make much money and I am okay with that. Currently, my dream job is to work with a book publishing company out of New York City. I have always said that I would rather have a job that I love and not make much money than earn a lot of money and hate what I do.
I have loved books ever since I was a child and it would be amazing to work with that and find the next book that will change someone's life. As Belle said in "Beauty and the Beast," "Your library makes our small corner of the world feel big."
I have known since I was in high school that I needed to go into a field that has something to do with English. It was always about telling and hearing stories and that's one of the reasons I fell in love with English. I want to have an impact on someone's life and have my work mean something - maybe even save someone's life.
There have been books in my life that have gotten me through some really rough times and I want to be able to help bring that work to people who need it.
One good thing about this field though is that even if the print medium goes out of style and fades out, electronic media and Kindle makes it so much easier to access these works. Of course, there will always be people in this world like myself who would much rather hold on to a book instead of reading it online.
One of the reasons that I think books will never truly fade away is because when you read a book it allows you to interpret what you think the movie will look like. This allows you to use your imagination instead of simply watching the movie and seeing how the director and the screenwriter interpreted the book.
I cannot wait to see what the publishing field is like once I graduate college. I think it will be an amazing thing to read books and edit for a living - the two things that I love more than anything. So for any of you out there that want to pursue a career path that doesn't give you much money think about this - money is not the most important thing when it comes to picking what you want to do with your life. Pick what will make you happy - life is stressful enough without adding on unnecessary unhappiness. And also just to make sure that I will still have a career in the future...
