There was a rustling in a bush near my apartment steps and a flash of gray fur. There, curled into a tight ball at the bottom of my steps was a cat. Her eyes were green like emeralds and her meow wasn't really a meow..it was more of a croak. She did not run or jump when I moved near her. Being the animal lover I am, I grabbed her up and carried her inside. She has since then made my house her throne.
When I found my cat, Gris Gris, outside, she was very skinny. That has since changed. She now is a mound of cat that is troubled with moving except when she hears her bowl being filled. She is quite the diva as well. She greets me with the tip of her head and an unenthusiastic croak. This is music to my ears. I have found, as cliche as it sounds, my cat has become my best friend.
How, you may ask? Well, she has all the qualities of a best friend. To begin with, she's a great listener. I can sit with her and talk for hours. Her purring lulls me to sleep and comforts me knowing that I am necessary in her life. Secondly, she is always with me. Seriously, I can't catch a break, She follows me from place to place swishing her tail. She is never annoyed by my company. Even when I lay on her or sit on her by mistake, she jumps right into my arms. She never ceases to love me even when I am annoying. Lastly, she is content with my company and really doesn't need anyone else. She never strays from me. I do get a bit jealous when she loves someone else over me.
This may all seem like I have this creepy relationship with my cat, but I don't. I think everyone has their dark days. My cat is the one who I can go to and we can comfort each other. She gives my purpose in life. She teaches me responsibility and how to care for something. As much as she may need me; I sometimes feel I need her more. She has kept me strong and always loved me when other people haven't. She is my best friend and my pet. She has protected me and guided me through emotional and physical turmoil. It almost seems like she is my caretaker. It is strange how much an animal can come to mean to someone. As she is my pet; I am her pet, too.
