Whether you are a tourist or a resident of San Diego, people are always looking for great places to eat at. And not to talk bad about huge restaurant chains, but sometimes there’s something about those hole-in-the wall places that give you that something that makes you coming back for more! I have lived in San Diego for the past year now and have come to be fond of some great restaurants, so from personal experiences, here are five places that you should definitely try out!
1. Pom Doro
Pom Doro is an Italian restaurant located
in Point Loma. I went there for the first time with my family, and let me tell
you it was the best pasta that I have ever had in my life! They make the pasta
fresh and all of the sauces from scratch. I had the tortellini and it was
amazing beyond belief as I took my first bite; no flavor was left out. I also
had the caprese salad and the mozzarella, tomatoes and basil were as fresh as
could be! I would definitely recommend this restaurant if you are an Italian
food fanatic.
2. Hodad’s
You may be familiar with this restaurant
from the popular television show “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives” hosted by the
famous Guy Fieri. This burger joint is located in Ocean Beach and is home to
the best burgers, fries and milkshakes of San Diego. One unusual thing that
they do at this restaurant is a thing called a bacon patty. You may be
wondering what that is and I can vouch to say that it is the best invention of mankind.
Instead of frying up a couple slices of bacon to put on the burger, what they do
is cut up the bacon into small pieces and form those pieces into a burger so
that you can get bacon in every bite. What a treat! And they have become so
popular that they had the chance to open anther restaurant in Downtown!
3. Broken Yolk
I’m not a big breakfast person but when I
do choose to go out for breakfast, I go to the Broken Yolk every time. There are
two locations in San Diego, one in Mission Valley and one in Point Loma. I
tried this restaurant the first time with my family as well. The ginormous
portions aren’t the only great thing about this restaurant they also have crepes!
I tried the Nutella and banana crepe with my sister, and it was delicious, but it
was so big that the two of us couldn’t even finish it. That should be an indicator
right there as to how huge the portions are there but that doesn’t keep me
away!
4. Café21
This unusual restaurant resides in the
heart of the Gaslamp district in beautiful downtown San Diego. What attracted
me the most was their white painted rod iron patio. It sets the ambiance of the
entire restaurant. Outside was the exact setting to have a perfect lunch. The
menu consists of various sandwiches and brunch items that use all fresh and
local products. On the menu there is an array of flavors from all over the
world. The most refreshing thing that I had to drink was probably the lemonade.
You could actually taste that it came from a real lemon and not from a package.
Go here and you will not be dissatisfied, I assure you!
5. Miguel’s
Last but of course not least, is probably one
of my favorite restaurants on this entire list. A friend introduced me to this
amazing restaurant, and we were both craving Mexican food, but not the drive
through kind, the REAL kind, and she suggested this gem. Now, whenever I have
people over, I always take them here. It’s just a short distance away from SDSU
in Old Town and if you don’t have a car you can take the trolley! Everything
about this restaurant is exceptional! The main dishes, the appetizers, and even
the drinks! I usually get the mint lemonade accompanied by the taco
combination. But what is even more tasty is the complementary chips and salsa,
unlike any other restaurant, Miguel’s serves their chips and salsa with a white
queso dip that is unbelievably good that its hard to stop eating even when you
are full. If you are in the Old Town area at all visit Miguel’s for an
unforgettable trip south of the border!
Now that you have the list of my favorite places to eat in San Diego, go out and try every single one of them, I promise you, you will not be disappointed!
