It can be hard to find a good movie to watch on Netflix. To be honest, the movies added to Netflix are usually pretty lame. So I've taken it upon myself to make a list of movies that are actually worth watching. At least in my opinion. Next time your laying in bed wondering what movie to watch, check out this list!
1. "Heathers" (1988) - Independent Dramedy
Picture "Mean Girls" taking place in the 80s but with much more drama. "Heathers" is such a good film and simply doesn't receive enough credit. The plot is somewhat all over the place and turns from a comedy to a thriller pretty unexpectedly. Winona Ryder plays Veronica, a regular girl who becomes part of the popular crowd, "The Heathers." She gets involved with J.D. who turns out to be a complete psycho and things go downhill from there. Definitely a must-watch for throwback movie lovers! (And people who loved Winona Ryder in Stranger Things).
2. "I am Sam" (2001) - Drama
A CLASSIC. When I saw it was added to Netflix, I lost it. Seriously one of the best movies I've ever seen. Dakota Fanning is absolutely adorable and Sean Penn is so convincing. The two are a perfect match for the film. Sam, a mentally-challenged father, is raising his daughter Lucy along with a special group of friends. But, when Lucy turns 7 and begins to surpass her father intellectually, a social worker tries to revoke his custody rights. An extremely moving film about the relationship between a father and his daughter.
3. "21" (2008) - Crime/Thriller Drama
Everyone should be excited that this movie was added to Netflix. First of all, Jim Sturgess is such a heartthrob and second of all, by the end of the movie you'll want to learn how to count cards. Ben, an MIT student who dreams of transferring to Harvard, is struggling to raise the money to be able to. In order to raise the money, Ben joins a group of students who make thousands of dollars by counting cards in Vegas casinos. The group is led by his math professor (played by Kevin Spacey). It's all fun and games until they get caught.
4. "Mr. Nobody" (2009) - Futuristic Drama
Jared Leto (insert heart eyes emoji here) plays the last human on Earth in this futuristic film. Taking place in 2092, 118-year-old Nemo recounts his life story to a reporter. This film is particularly great because it moves back and forth between storylines intertwining the different lives Nemo imagined for himself. Are all the lives discussed in the film just a figment of his imagination? Who knows.
5. "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" (2012) - Rom-Com/SciFi
It's hard to place this film in a genre because it could technically fit under any single one of them. It's SciFi because the world is about to end. It's a comedy because any movie that Steve Carrell stars in is a comedy (am i wrong?). It's a romance because the two lead roles fall in love. Basically, GO WATCH IT. (Disclaimer: Keira Knightley's and Steve Carrell's age difference is a little uncomfortable to be brutally honest.)
6. "Asthma" (2014) - Independent Drama/Romance
Indie films can be slow and sometimes anti-climactic but I swear this movie is worth the watch. Benedict Samuel plays the bad boy rockstar of every girl's dream and the beautiful and ever-so-talented Kristen Ritter plays a hard-headed tattoo artist. This junkie rock n' roller, who suffers from heroin addiction, steals a vintage car and takes a soft-spoken tattoo artist for the ride of her life. It's a simple but definitely one of my all-time favorites.
7. "Gaga: Five Foot Two" (2017) - Documentary
Anyone who knows me knows I'm a huge Gaga fan so of course this has to go on the list. I'll admit that documentaries can get a little boring but this one is about the most eccentric popstar the world has seen in the last decade. This documentary is less about her life as Lady Gaga and more about her life as Stefani Germanotta. Gaga discusses her love life, the loneliness that comes with fame and the illness she's been struggling with for the past few years. It'll make you a fan if you're not one already.
