A great way I pass the time is by watching gory movies that make me cringe. If you are a horror/thriller movie fan, you know nothing beats a good film that has a great plot as well as great, realistic gore. I decided to create a list of five good, gory movies because we all know how hard those can be to find sometimes. If you love gory, truly disturbing movies, then these films are for you. Viewer discretion is advised, these are not films to be watching with children or anyone easily disturbed, trust me.
1. "A Serbian Film" (2011), Directed by Srjdan Spasojevic
This movie is definitely not for the faint at heart. A Serbian Film follows an ex-porn-star, Milos. Milos retired from the pornographic film profession, falls into a tight spot financially and happens to come across an irrefutable offer from a man that deems himself an artist. Milos decides this film can be the end to his family's troubles, or so he thought. The director of the adult film asks things of Milos that he never had to face before, challenging his personal morals and beginning a personal battle within Milos.
A Serbian Film has an outstanding plot-line and you won't find yourself bored watching the film. If you are looking for the ultimate cringe-worthy movie, this is it! The director of the film, Srjdan Spasojevic uses extremely disturbing imagery depicting the most gruesome of acts to refer to the political and social unrest in Serbia. Beware when watching this because it will leave an impact on you for the rest of your life, believe me.
2. "Cannibal Holocaust" (1980), Directed by Ruggero Deodato
A group of film students travel to the rain forest and go missing. A professor ventures into the rainforest to find the group of filmmakers and stumbles across the lost film canisters in a village of cannibalistic villagers, containing the secret to their disappearance. Watching the film uncovers the terrible truth of what became of the film crew.
Cannibal Holocaust disturbed me in many ways. First, being there is real animal killings in the film. The director has since then expressed how this was a mistake on his part and he wish he didn't include that in the film, but it had already been done. The film reflects on the cruelties of man which at points definitely made me uncomfortable as well because it seemed some of the scenes were long and drawn out.
In the end, the most disturbing part lies within a human impaling which looks incredibly realistic. The director of the film actually had the actors of the filmmakers sign a contract stating that they are not to make an appearance at any public events. Eventually due to the realistic effects of the film, the director was investigated for murder and other cruelties which were all fake of course. That is why there is so much controversy surrounding Cannibal Holocaust.
3. "Martyrs" (2008), Directed by Pascal Laugier
A young girl, Lucie, found after escaping a couple that abused her, is put in a foster home. There she establishes a lifelong friendship with Anna. As Lucie continues to have horrifying flashbacks of her abuse, she is driven to seek revenge on the couple that inflicted pain upon her and ruined her life. Lucie tracks down her abusers, but not all is what it seems.
Martyrs was a thought-provoking thriller which left me on the edge of my seat. The realistic effects only enhanced the experience! Not to mention the end had an awesome twist. This movie has to be one of my favorites because it creeped me out and not many movies do that to me. If you love thrillers this is a must see!
4. "Old Boy" (2003), Directed by Park Chan-wook
Although not the most visually disturbing movie on the list, this psychological thriller definitely left me a bit disturbed. Dae-Su, a bitter man, one day wakes up in a suspicious room where he learns that his family has been murdered on a television and he is the main suspect. Dae-Su, abducted by an unknown man spends 15 years in a hotel style room where he is forced to stay alive. After 15 years, Dae-Su breaks free to find the person who imprisoned him and seeks revenge.
This film is full of action and has a crazy, unexpected twist at the end making it worthy of watching. Of course, there is a lot of gore, but appropriate gore for the scenes rather than just provided shock factor gore. The end will leave you seriously disturbed as you learn the truth of why Dae-Su was imprisoned.
5. "Dead Alive (Braindead)" (1993), Directed by Peter Jackson
Dead Alive features a young man named Lionel who faces an extremely over protective, wealthy mother that seems to control every aspect of his life. Lionel falls in love with Paquita and takes her on a date to the zoo. Feeling threatened by the presence of another woman intruding into Lionel's life, his mother follows the two on their date and gets bitten by a mysterious creature in the zoo called a Sumatran rat-monkey. Soon after, Lionel's mother begins to feel the effects of the bite and becomes undead. Lionel has to contain the spread of this infection, ensuring that it does not spread rapidly however when a slimy, distant family member hears of the death of Lionel's mother he comes to town and throws a party at the estate, leading to complete chaos.
Dead Alive is a cheesy, yet gore packed film that is amusing to watch. The film holds many disturbing scenes, but makes up for them with a comedic touch. Although it is not a completely serious film, it holds a lot of things horror movie fans love, including an epic fight scene between a priest and zombies. It's just hard to believe the same director created the Lord Of The Rings trilogy!
