I've always been a major movie buff. A few months ago I made a life-altering decision: instead of watching pointless TV to all asleep at night, I should watch an interesting documentary. It not only became entertaining, but made me learn something new or interesting about the world that I wouldn’t have already known. So here are my top favorite documentaries on Netflix; some silly, some heart wrenching, and some unforgettable.
For the Music Fan
If you are a fanatic of 90’s music, then Kurt & Courtney is the perfect documentary for you. Kurt & Courtney documents and follows the rise of Kurt Cobain’s successful music career with Nirvana, and his ongoing struggles throughout his life. The film also focuses on his tumultuous relationship with Courtney Love, and his heartbreaking death. It’s an eye-opening experience into Kurt Cobain’s life and causes a mystery to make you think.

For a laugh
So this movie isn’t supposed to be a comedy by any means, but the ridiculousness of The Queen of Versailles makes you flabbergasted and amused all at the same time. It’s a documentary about an incredibly wealthy couple that strives to build their mega mansion in Florida, but endure struggles when the recession hits and threatens their lifestyle. Though the topic is serious, the look into their ultra gaudy and flashy lifestyle will keep you interested and entertained the entire time.
The Tear Jerker
Dear Zachary is probably one of the most heart wrenching movies I have ever experienced, and though it will break your heart, it is an incredible piece. Documented by a man who had recently lost his murdered friend, the creator of the movie sets out to interview the many friends and family of his late best friend, all in the hopes to leave a lasting memory for his son, who will never meet his father. The movie is absolutely not what you would think, and is filled with so many twist and turns, that not even the creator of the film intended on. It is a MUST SEE for any movie watcher.
For the Animal Activist
So I know 80% of the world has seen Blackfish, but if you haven’t YOU MUST. I watched it for the first time over a year ago, and immediately was shocked by what I saw. Even if you’ve heard ALL about it, it is still an eye opening documentary that will change the way you think about Sea World and you MUST SEE IT.

Another Tear Jerker
Alive Inside follows a social worker who travels to all types of nursing homes, throughout America, using music to help patients with Alzheimer’s. It is heartwarming, motivational, and will make any person with a heart want to go out there and help the world. Truly an amazing insight!
For the Fashion Lover
I am obsessed with anything fashion, so Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s was right up my alley. This documentary takes a look into the world famous, luxury department store in Manhattan. The film not only shows you the ins and outs of the iconic Bergdorf Goodman’s, but also will make any fashion lover drool and dream of an experience at the department store of a lifetime.

For a Bit of History
One of my FAVORITES, We Were Here, chronicles the widespread AIDs crisis in San Francisco in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. It not only documents my favorite city in the world, but it traces the lives of 5 people who were affected by the disease during the epidemic. It gives you insight on a time in history that many know little about, and shows you the true strength of many people.
