How Music Changed My Life

Free-Verse Exploration of the Healing Power of Music

How Music Changed My Life
Eli Brown

We live in a world plagued by pain.
A world full of forced smiles, stifled cries, tears hidden behind covered windows and locked doors.
And people deal with that human temperament in different ways.
Some play the role of the person they used to be.
Some attend services and worship gods that will one day save their totured souls.
Some search for solace at the bottom of bottles, hoping for healing or at least the numbness the burning liquid brings.

But a blessed few, a saintly selection, turn to the arts.
Let the pen draw not from encased ink, but instead from their bleeding hearts.
Paint with the tears of memories that will never dull,
Create concoctions of chords to mimic the cries of shattered souls.

I used to think that the greats turned to music because their broken spirits were the key to meaningful melody.
But I've realized now that their colossal creations were not for reasons so selfish, but instead because composition of harmony was the only way to bring back harmony to a life so out of tune.

We have all stumbled across measures in our song when chords grew unstable.
When the melody disappeared.
When the entire key changed and the result was an unbearable cacophony of misery.
And don't you dare pretend as if you are to young to have experienced excruciating anguish, no matter who told you otherwise, because that agony was real and it really hurt.

But that anger, that longing, that sorrow that left you sobbing, is what brought you here.
The vulnerability your catastrophe created is what makes you human, and what makes you a musician.
The most beautiful music screams from the hearts of the most beautifully broken, and somewhere inside you, you are a beautiful mess.
So today, I implore you for the hardest thing I could ever ask.
I ask you to be vulnerable.
I ask you to show the world your miserable moments and blatantly scream "I am broken."
For if you let your shattered soul into the light, the music will repair your broken being.
And with your presentation of vulnerability, you can begin to help heal the heart of humanity.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
