Music, reality... sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference. Some people fail to realize how much music influences their lives and paints a picture of the type of person they are. Personally, my favorite genres of music are house and classical. It may seem like my music taste is at two completely different ends of the spectrum, and they definitely are. But this varying spectrum of music interests simply implies that I have a personality and lifestyle that is not monochromatic.
Allow me to elaborate. I like to think of myself as a very energetic person. I always need to find myself doing something, and I find myself unable to sit down at times. House music has a vibe that is very much analogous to my lifestyle. If you aren’t familiar with house music, then allow me to describe it to you. The best way I can describe it is the “heartbeat genre." It is typically composed of a 128 beats-per-minute drum kick and a melodic chord progression. You can’t help but to bob your head like Run-D.M.C. To some, this genre may seem repetitive (to each his own). But it does a fantastic job of helping me keep a steady tempo throughout my day.
So how does classical music fit into my personality? As much as I like to be productive and energetic, I get burnt out quickly, especially since I go to a school such as MSOE. The majority of the classical music I listen to has a slow and relaxing tempo. This type of music helps me relax. I always find myself needing peace and quiet throughout my week. Without classical music, I would be in a very anxious and stressful place.
Based on what I have shared about my music interests, I have given you a general overview of what type of person I am. I encourage you to explore your music tastes, and explore what your music taste says about yourself. I feel that it can give you a lot of insight to who you are. Being in college is all about discovering who you are and what makes you tick. You may find that music has had a bigger impact on your life than you think.
