You and your kids most likely have completely different definitions and examples of “good music,” and it is important to explore both sides of the argument. Both generations of music lovers don’t realize how connected they are. Bands of today are heavily influenced by music of the past. So the next time your kid reaches for the aux cord don’t freak out! It's not all Justin Bieber songs and explicit rap verses.
alt-J
Forming in 2007 and not releasing their first album until 2012, alt-J are fresh to the music scene. Bringing a new sound to indie rock/pop alt-J is a mix of eerie vocals hip instruments and cool electronics. Your kids probably love them, and you can definitely learn to.
Mac DeMarco
Mac is the gross, cigarette-smoking boy you never wanted your kids to hang around with. But his immature boyish behavior translates into some great music. His beachy rock sound make you feel like a high school kid during the summer hanging out with friends. With dreamy guitar riffs and sweet lyrics, Mac is sure to bring you back to your younger days.
The Black Keys
Chances are you’ve heard of The Black Keys or at least have heard their music. The duo, comprised of Pat Carney and Dan Auerbach, is sure to please. They have revived the underground bluesy rock scene proving that rock & roll isn’t dead. They’ve been around since ‘96 and don’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon.
Amy Winehouse
Most of you will recognize the name as the girl who said “no no no to rehab." However, Amy Winehouse is one of the most talented and influential females of this generation. She paved the ways for singers like Adele and Duffy and open the doors to new age jazz. Amy’s jazzy vocal range is a sure hit.
Weezer
Without a doubt, you have heard your kids blasting Weezer at some point. "Island In The Sun"? "Say It Ain’t So"? "Beverly Hills"? Whichever song it was, it was probably good. Weezer formed back in 1992 and have been going strong since, in fact they just released a new single last month. The rock band is the epitome of misunderstood teenagers.
As you can hopefully see, all that “crap” your kids are listening to really isn’t that bad. A lot of their favorites probably stem from the songs and artists you like! So the next time you kid is the one controlling the radio, don’t dread it too much!
