Music Makes Everything Better

"Good music is good music, and everything else can go to hell."- Dave Matthews

Music Makes Everything Better

Are there really two types of people when it comes to music?

Lyric people: People who listen and dissect the lyrics of a song trying to find the underlying meaning because it connects to their life at the moment.

Music people: People who like a song based on the way it sounds, a song with a good and catchy beat, without paying attention to the lyrics or reading into them.

Can you be both? Or do you have to choose? I guess you could say it depends on your mood. Maybe if you're struggling music is what helps you get through it, and when you're in the mood to dance, anything with a catchy beat works for you. Whether you choose to side with one or the other, or both at least you recognize the effect music has on you.

You could say those who love music feel a little more because they can appreciate a song for what it really is. And those who have the ability to create music are even luckier because they can create something that has the potential to make someone else's day and something that allows them to express how they feel.

Personally I love listening to music, especially live music. It takes place in the moment and there's no strict way of going about it. There's a certain feeling I get when I see a band/singer perform live–similar to feeling I get when I see pizza but that's irrelevant. It simply makes me happy.

Daniel J. Levitin, the author of the book, "This Is Your Brain on Music" makes a valid point. He mentions,

"Whenever humans come together for any reason, music is there: weddings, funerals, graduation from college, men marching off to war, stadium sporting events, a night on the town, prayer, a romantic dinner, mothers rocking their infants to sleep ... music is a part of the fabric of everyday life."

Music means something to everyone. There are certain songs that bring you back to certain times and make you remember everything about it. For example, for me the song "Wake Me Up" by Avicii is the song I associate with my Freshman year of college. The same way I associate "Yellow" by Coldplay with my senior year of high school and "Hunger" by Of Monsters and Men with this past summer. Everyone does this. We all have specific songs that take us back to a specific time in our lives, whether it be good or bad.

Without music what would we do when we're driving, lying in bed bored, or chillin' with our friends?? We'd actually have to talk to each other or be productive, what a nightmare!!

The more I think about it life would be pretty boring. There would be no background music in television shows or movies to create a dramatic effect or give the viewer a certain feeling. It would limit how some people express themselves. Everyone has their outlet, some express themselves in words, some do it through artwork and others express themselves through music.

Johnny Depp said it himself,

"Music touches us emotionally where words alone can't."

When you're happy, sad, annoyed or just relaxing, music understands. There's a song for everything and every type of mood, situation, or person.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
