One of the most popular Disney films Mulan gave us characters whom we all identified with. But one character that everyone probably feels they have something in common with is Mulan's guardian Mushu.
Sarcastic, witty and with just a hint of poor judgement, Mushu describes college life with some of his most famous lines. Even though Mushu does create trouble for Mulan he remains a loyal and true friend, even though in the beginning his intentions were selfish. Here are four instances/lines from Mushu that perfectly sum up college life.
1. When Mushu awakens Mulan for her first day of training what he says is pretty much some version of what we say to ourselves. "Now it's first day of training so listen to your teacher and no fighting." This same mantra is one that's been instilled in us for years before every first day of school and even in college it still comes in handy.
2. The incident with the Great Stone Dragon. This entire incident where Mushu attempts to awaken the statue before accidentally breaking it is a great metaphor for motivating ourselves to study. First comes the demanding stage: "Yo Rocky, you got to wake up and go fetch Mulan." Total silence, frustrating as it is you try bribing your brain. Still no motivation? Time to get into your brain's metaphorical face and try to intimidate it. Eventually you're screaming to yourself "hello? Hello!! Hello!" By this point your brain's had enough and like the Great Stone Dragon crumbles.
3. The Dishonor Rant. Probably one of Mushu's most popular and recognized lines may seem a bit arbitrary but it applies to the times when we're hard on ourselves for not getting the grades we want. It doesn't even have to be a failing grade, but maybe it's a C+ on what was thought to be on A+ paper. At one point we've probably thought of the infamous rant. "That's it dishonor, dishonor on your whole family. Dishonor on you, dishonor on your cow (or dog, cat, goldfish, iguana)." Of course the line itself is so funny we might just forget about being upset and laugh.
4. Mushu's very first line in the whole film. Whether it's getting up early after a long weekend, finishing a difficult test or wrapping up midterms or finals, we've all said these two words in our heads and probably out loud too. "I LIVE!" Two little words that can apply to so many different situations.
All around just about everything Mushu says applies to something in real life, but these four instances in particular really set the tone for college life.
All of us have a little Mushu inside us.
