2015 may be a slow year in terms of Academy Award nominees, but there's no doubt that this is the most profitable year we will see for quite some time. From "Jurassic World" to "Spectre" to "MockingJay Part 2," there was no shortage of blockbusters. If the movies are your holiday destination, you'll still be able to find some noteworthy films, even with just two months left in the year. Here is what is left.
5. "The Night Before"
Directed by: Jonathan Levine
Starring: Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anthony Mackie
From the team that brought us such modern masterpieces as "This is the End," "Neighbors" and "The Interview," comes a holiday film probably not for the whole family. With cameos from Tracy Morgan and Miley Cyrus, "The Night Before" could be what we expect, deeply offensive but highly entertaining.
4. "The Revenant"
Directed by: Alejandro G. Inarritu
Starring: Leonardo Dicaprio, Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson
The first film since winning multiple Oscars for his work on "Birdman," Director Alejandro G. Inarritu ventures into the snowy wilderness to unfold a tale of a man (Dicaprio) brutally attacked by a bear and nearly killed in 1823. His companions rob him and leave him to die in the harsh winters of the Nevada territory, leaving him to extract revenge. Dicaprio and Hardy in the same film? Sign me up.
3. "Concussion"
Directed by: Peter Landseman
Starring: Will Smith, Alec Baldwin. Albert Brooks
A biographical film about Nigerian forensic pathologist, Bennet Omalu, the doctor leading the way for justice for American NFL football players who have experienced great head trauma through CTE. This film will leave a black eye on the NFL at a time when it already has quite the black eye due to their negligence of domestic abuse and player safety. The fallout from the film will be bigger than the film itself, but it could also be a well-overdue Oscar bid for Will Smith.
2. "The Hateful Eight"
Directed by: Quentin Tarantino
Starring: Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh.
What better way to spend Christmas Day than watching limbs fly and blood pour in a Tarantino production? Tarantino’s second straight Western following "Django Unchained," "The Hateful Eight" looks like a throwback to his older, grittier films. A blizzard forces eight fugitives to coexist in a stagecoach Passover. Will Tarantino let his end peacefully? Nope. Doubt it.
1. "Star Wars: the Force Awakens"
Directed by: J.J. Abrams
Starring: Harrison Ford, Mark Hammill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac
C'mon, who put this anywhere but number one on a list like this? They are lying to themselves if they did. The Force Awakens has completely shattered box office records already. It comes out a month from now. 30 years following the events of Return of the Jedi, TFA looks to chronicle the search for revenge for sith lord Kylo Ren, already looking like a legendary villain just from trailers. Not much more is known but what is known is that this will be the biggest movie America has seen. Possibly ever.
