F. Scott Fitzgerald’s popular work "The Great Gatsby"has been adapted into different movies that are meant to portray his idea in new ways but keep the true origins. The movie version of the book was released in 1974 and then again recreated in 2013. Both of the movies are based off the book and meant to mirror the plot through film. Though made in different time periods the more recent 2013 version of "The Great Gatsby"succeeds in capturing Fitzgerald’s narrative with greater accuracy than the older movie.
The 2013 remake of "The Great Gatsby" stayed true to its roots as it retained most of the qualities of the classic book. The cast chosen by the producers match the look that Fitzgerald describes in his novel. This is important for properly representing the same personalities that the characters they are constructed from have. In the novel, Daisy is described as being “buoyed up as though upon an anchored balloon,” giving her a beautiful and almost divine existence in the eyes of others. This is even expressed through her clothing as her dress is “rippling and fluttering as if [Daisy] had just been blown back in after a short flight around the house.”
The movie portrayed her angelic presence through her clothing, lavish dresses, jewelry and the very way she carried herself throughout the movie. The same can be said for Gatsby, Tom and Jordan who were also characterized by their expensive suits and apparel worn by the cast that also served in capturing the 1920s atmosphere of when the events of the book took place. By looking the part along with exceptional portrayal of the main characters the film is able to achieve an accurate revival of the novel.
Unlike the 1974 version of the movie, the new version was better able to showcase the artistic imagery from the book as seen in the magnitude of Gatsby’s grand mansion through flashy lighting and glamorous décor. As seen in Gatsby’s parties the wealthy yet less fashionable lifestyle of East Egg could be seen just like it was described in the novel. Many of the lines from the script are direct quotes from Fitzgerald’s writing, keeping the plot and characters true to the novel and giving it a more accurate representation than the 1974 film version.
