Why Mixer Thursdays Are the Best Thursdays

A full explanation of why mixers are so wonderful.

23

For those who don't know, mixers are a type of themed party that a fraternity throws for a specific sorority. At mixers, the host fraternities get together with the guest sororities and they dance and party and have a magical time. Mixer nights are the best nights of the week, and here’s why.

First of all, mixers create excitement for what would be just another boring Thursday night. The row is no doubt about 1000 times better when there are mixers going on. Just the anticipation of going out with all your sisters dressed in crazy outfits is enough to make anyone want to skip their 2 p.m. Thursday class to go thrift shopping for the perfect thing to wear. And getting ready with your sisters is only half the fun. Mixers create a pleasant escape from loud music and endless games of ping pong with the brothers. You actually get to dance at mixers whereas on a normal Thursday night you’re probably just standing there waiting for your turn in pong and listening to Trap Queen for the third time. You also have an excuse to go to a frat house you don't hang out at often and possibly meet new people! Even if your sorority isn’t having a mixer or you're not involved in a Greek organization, you can still show up at 10 when the doors are open to everyone. Why should you miss out on an awesome Thursday night just because you had a mixer last week? We’re all pretty nice people, and we welcome mixer crashers (but reluctantly, of course).

Second of all, mixers allow you to wear a ridiculous outfit for an entire night, and no one can say anything about it. You wanna wear a Ninja Turtles cut off shirt to a “when I grow up” mixer? Go right ahead. You want an excuse to wear your Alabama beanie? “Duck calls and overalls” sounds like the perfect time to do just that. You wanna support your favorite holiday by wearing shamrock beads to the “shark attack” mixer? Do it. These things may not seem to make sense with the themes, but who cares. Mixers are the perfect time to showcase the interesting things hiding in your closet, including that feather boa you got at Party City four years ago. Your wardrobe and your imagination are the only limiting factors on your mixer outfits.

Finally, mixers give you a reason to buy another comfort colors frocket T-shirt. Of course, not all fraternities and sororities design T-shirts for their mixers, but it’s 100 percent necessary to buy the T-shirt when they do. Don't listen to your parents or your bank account, you can ALWAYS use another T-shirt (plus T-shirts come out of student accounts, so you can just tell Mom and Dad you were buying books like the good student you are). The more T-shirts you have, the less often you have to do laundry. T-shirts are the perfect reminder of the good memories you made at a mixer. Why wouldn’t you want a T-shirt to remind you of the great time you had while dancing around in a pool covered in leis at the Luau mixer? Plus, if you decide you hate the it after buying it, you can pass it down to your little.

So, with that being said, mixer season is in just a few short months. Get ready, people.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
