Of All The Things To Miss About Home, I Pick My Mom's Cooking

At college, it's just eating fattening food at absurd hours.

Although I've come to learn that my second home is the University of Delaware, my heart will always be on Long Island, New York. I am immensely happy with my choice of picking University of Delaware, however, I will always miss my hometown and home friends. There are so many things I miss at home including my family, friends, food, shops, and so much more. I would have to say that I miss my mom's cooking with a huge passion.

My mother's cooking is definitely extraordinary compared to most. We live in a very healthy household including only healthy snacks and healthy cookbooks. Her meals, especially dinner, really fill me, my brother, and my father up. I am never too full where I have stomach pains or still hungry where I will go snack later on. Instead, her meals keep me content until I wake up the next morning or until the next meal.

She does her research so she is able to cook the healthiest and most enjoyable meals with all the right proteins, nutrients, and carbohydrates. Her "Skinny Recipe" cook book is used for almost all of her dinners and she only cooks with much tender, love, and care.

As silly as it is that I miss this most, I never feel content with my meals here at Delaware. I am always going to sleep hungry and never get the right nutrients. I try my best to cook or buy food with protein, such as cold cuts, however, it becomes increasingly hard for me to do so with the workload I have. As a student, I cram for my tests and do homework most hours during the night, so eating properly is not of high priority for me, and I'm sure most students would say the same. With a lack of healthy food decisions, I tend to get sick more often. It becomes harder for our bodies to fight off germs when we do not eat the appropriate foods, don't drink enough fluids, and don't get enough sleep. This is also why I miss my mother's cooking the most.

As I do have an apartment, I try to buy foods high in vitamins and protein. However, this is hard because as a college student, it is pretty difficult to purchase these expensive food items. Many college students cannot balance the ridiculous amount of school with a job on top of that. Like I said before, we cram for tests late at night and get hungry. Hence, we eat fattening and unhealthy foods at absurd hours.

So yes, as silly as it sounds, out of all things to miss about home I miss my mother's cooking the most. I miss her dinners the most and I can't wait to go home and eat everything in site!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register.
