RNC, DNC and Emails! Oh my!

Don't Mind the Man Behind the Curtain (Or Woman)

If you have been keeping up with American politics you probably already know what the RNC and DNC are. If you don't, RNC stands for Republican National Convention and DNC is the same thing, just with Democrats. Basically Republican and Democratic delegates are elected by the American people through a system nobody actually understands and then travel to where ever their convention is being held. In this case the RNC was in Cleveland and the DNC was in Philadelphia.

It may have seemed as though the two presidential candidates had already been chosen (i.e. Trump and Hillary Clinton) because of Bernie Sanders making less appearances and literally every republican candidate besides Trump dropping out of the race. But there is an official system put into place so that everyone is absolutely 100 percent sure of who the presidential candidates are. And because this is America its as convoluted and confusing as the series finally of Lost.

Even if you haven't been keeping up with American politics you may already have a idea of how high tensions were in the two major cities. You probably wont be surprised to hear that both conventions were marred and surrounded by chaos and scandals either. So, let's begin at the beginning.

The Republican National Convention was held in Cleveland, Ohio. It started on July 18 and ended on the 21. For four days the Republican party struck fear into the American people, using prejudice, and false statistics. There was very little policy or plans of any kind mentioned. So basically it was Trump's whose campaign in a nutshell.

There was also Michelle Obama Melania Trump's plagiarized speech, written by the possibly fabricated Meredith McIver. Ted Cruz was booed off stage for refusing to endorse Trump saying 'Vote your conscious.' There were chants of 'GUILTY' and 'LOCK HER UP' when the subject of Hilary Clinton was brought up. It was a circus, that's for sure.

Plagiarism, Ted Cruz, and disturbing chants may have gotten the most attention but the juiciest bit happened on the first day. On the 18, the first day of the convention the Republic party voted on the rules they would be using on the remainder of the convention. Usually they use a 'aye' or 'nay' method to do this. But, as the rules state, if the majority of delegates from at least seven states sign a petition asking for a roll call vote the convention has to go state by state and count the number of votes for delegates.

Nine states submitted petitions, two more than necessary. The movement was started by anti-Trump delegates who believed that not passing the new rules would hinder Trump's chances. Whether or not it would actually stop Trump from being the nominee wasn't really the point. They had come to Cleveland for a chance to be heard and they were raising their voice in accordance with the rules of the convention.

Rules that it didn't seem to be honored. Of the nine states that gave petitioned Colorado, Washington, Utah, Minnesota, Wyoming, Maine, Iowa, Virginia and Washington D.C. the RNC officials say that three withdrew their petitions. Which states were those you ask? No one knows. The RNC refuses to release the names of the states who withdrew or had inadequate petitions.

Fred Brown, a delegate from Alaska, said that he had more than enough signatures for the petition and when he went to the designated area to present the petition to a convention official, no one was there. Some say she was hiding others say she was speaking with the states who wanted to withdraw their petitions. Brown then went to the stage where he was ignored by the chair and turned away by a security guard. The Alaska delegations mic was also turned off.

The whole things a huge mess of speculation and and questions. Whether or not the American people will ever actually find out what really happened is unsure. There's only one thing people know for sure: it's only going to get uglier.

So why did the Republican party squash this request? Well that's the million dollar question whose answer may be found in one of America's most controversial billionaires. There are some theories that Donald Trump, or at least his campaign, is responsible for putting an end to this little rebellion.

But why? Even though there are plenty of Republicans against Trump, without a clear second choice that everyone agreed on, there was little hope for the anti-Trump movement to succeed. So why bother silencing them? Was to to present a united front to the rest of America? Were they afraid things might get violent? The answer is about as clear as where Trump's comb over begins or ends. The one thing that can be seen is the injustice the delegates who submitted petitions faced. Delegates who traveled to Cleveland on their own dime. Delegates who followed the rules of the convention and voiced their opinion in accordance. Delegates who were only met with closed doors and no answers.

For any Democrats out there feeling smug about the Republicans throwing freedom of speech and the basics of democracy out the window, don't.

Debbie Wassermann Schultz. Ever heard of her? She was the chairperson for the Democratic National Committee and on July 25, the day the DNC started, the Democratic party were once again entrenched in a scandal involving emails. You thought you'd heard the end of it when it came to leading democrats and their emails didn't you? Well you're wrong. WikiLeaks released a slew of emails, 19,252 to be exact, that prove that there was some sort of conspiracy from within the democratic party against Bernie Sanders. These emails show members of the democratic party planning to paint Bernie Sanders as an atheist and report that Bernie's campaign was a unorganized in attempts to discredit him. There are even some that say to scrap certain news articles because they had 'too much Bernie'.

Weather you like Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders you have to understand, Debbie Wasserman Shultz claimed to be impartial and said the Democratic National Committee was impartial. She was plotting against Bernie Sanders. She lied to the American people.

It's quite possible that even without this involvement that Bernie Sanders would be in the same possession he is now, ending his campaign and endorsing Hilary Clinton for president, but the American people should have been the ones to decide that.

Would the Democratic National Committee have done this if they weren't up against their worst nightmare, The Donald? One way to look at it is that they needed to put forward the candidate with the best chance at beating Trump. While Bernie has a cleaner track record he is more openly liberal than Hilary and could alienate any of the more conservative crowed, especially republicans who hate the idea of Trump as commander and chief that they'd vote democrat.

So of course the delegates there to support Bernie Sanders had something to say about it. Sarah Silverman, a comedian, spoke at the convention as a former Bernie Sanders supporter ready to put her vote and support behind Hilary Clinton, went as far to say the protesting and booing Sanders supports where 'being ridiculous'.

But don't they have the right to be a little bit outraged? Outraged is the wrong word, seeing as Bernie Sanders supports' protest seem to be peaceful. There was a conspiracy against them from the beginning. They never had a fair shot. The whole DNC was choreographed in Hilary's favor before she was named as the democratic nominee. Every speaker endorsed her and seemed to be specifically chosen to make her seem more human and approachable, as her manufactured body language and speeches have been one of her weaknesses. Even though Bernie also endorsed her, he seemed shunted to the side before Hilary was named as the Democratic nominee.

It seems as though both parties have gone out of their way to silence delegates. For what? America? The greater good? There is another question that people must ask themselves. How long has this been going on?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines.
