If it hasn't already happened for you, it's happening in the next week or so. Welcome week, or also known as the first week back on campus before classes start. For some, this week just provides more time for catching up with old friends. Freshmen, however, are going in blindly, not knowing the first thing about what living on campus is like. Like learning anything new, figuring out this new found freedom and independence will take some time. So here are just a few tips on some subjects that can get easily glossed over.
1. Don't be afraid to make friends
Of course everyone wants to make new friends, but for some it can be really hard to approach a complete stranger. That's why participating in school gatherings and fun events can be important. Invite some neighbors on your dorm room floor and takek the lead on the planning.
2. Actually eat at least three meals a day
Everyone loves to eat, but sometimes in a busy schedule, it can be easy to forget or lose track of time. Figure out when you have the time to eat and plan ahead. Bring a wrapped sandwich in your book bag if the time crunch is too short. There is always time to keep up a healthy diet.
3. Set your alarm every night
You might have to wake up at different times on different days. So to avoid being the one that walks into class late, figure out what time works for you. Also, leave enough time for wandering if you're unsure of where the building is.
4. Utilize the gym while you can
Just like a healthy diet, a healthy amount of physical activity is important too. Plan a regimen, maybe find some workout buddies. Either way, it's a great way to blow of steam and meet new people.
5. Get a routine down early
Figure out which times of day you asre busy and which ones you're free. The sooner you learn this pattern, the easier it will be to study, eat, sleep, and socialize.
6. Call your parents every once in awhile
It doesn't have to be everyday, but they do miss you even if you've only been gone for a week. Let them know you are still thinking about them.
7. Try something new
College is the time to discover who you are and who you want to be. Try something that might be a little out of your comfort zone and you could be surprised by the outcome.
8. Learn when the dining hall will be busy
Learning this will help you avoid standing in long lines or elbowing your way to the salad bar. It definitely helps in between classes if you know when to avoid the lunch rush.
9. Check the weather radar frequently
Just because it's sunny when you wake up, doesn't mean that's the weather all day. Be prepared, especially if you are not getting back to your room until later in the day.
10. You don't need to pull all nighters
The common misconception that every night is an all nighter in college. It's in all the movies and all the books when in fact, if you just manage your time throughout the day and stick with a plan, you should be well rested to repeat it all again tomorrow.
11. Respect quiet hours
Whether you're living in the dorms or you are freshly moved into your brand new apartment, everyone around you has very different schedules. So just keep in mind your volume, especially during exams week.
College is as fun as you make it and will be as challenging as you make it. Learn what works for you quickly and you should rarely run into conflict. Things change and sometimes you will have a moment of surprise, but sticking with these helpful tips will minimize failure and help you excel in your first year away from home.
