The fight for the primaries has begun, and the American people - as well as the media - cannot get enough of it. Whether it's a tweet Hillary Clinton sent in 2009 that contradicts her current views or some ridiculous moment that leaves you thinking, "Did Donald Trump really just say that?" all eyes are on the current candidates. With all of this attention on the race, the media seems to leave out an important outlook: that of the newest generation of eligible voters. In light of that, here are what 16 millennials are thinking about the 2016 presidential election.
1. Ithaca College, Ithaca, New York
"I love Bernie Sanders because he wants to fund the arts, he is a firm believer in women’s rights, he cares about the environment, and he is accepting with regard to minority rights and immigration laws. Although Bernie may be the oldest candidate running for office this year, he has a young spirit that resonates with young voters all around the country!"
2. Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.
"My favorite candidate is Ben Carson (Republican) and I like him mostly because he's been separate from politics his entire life (he is a former neurosurgeon). He's just a really smart guy who wants to take a more conservative approach to U.S. politics. He's not like the other politicians who make decisions based on what's going to keep them in office for longer because he's never held a public office."
3. Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts
"I want Trump. What I think is that a lot of the stuff Donald Trump says is for attention, and we are giving him our full attention. Although some of the stuff he says isn't politically correct, in my opinion that's better. Every president we have had has been influenced by money and saying the right thing. We finally have someone come along who isn't influenced by money and is willing to go off the script. I think that rawness is refreshing and something this country needs. Trump also makes good points on increasing border control. If we have a whole bunch of people form other countries come in and take jobs, regardless if we want them or not, we complain that the job market is in bad shape. By increasing security and making jobs available to the American people, the public has no ground to complain about the jobs available."
4. Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia
"I don't want Hillary and Bernie because I feel that if they are elected, they're going to take away my personal liberties. I don't want Bush because a father-son presidential campaign seems too much like a monarchy. I don't want Trump because he seems like an ass clown, so I guess I want Ben Carson because he agrees with the second amendment and doesn't seem like he wants to take away my inalienable rights."
5. University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin
"Jeb Bush was governor of Florida for two terms and during that time he made major reforms to the education system and to the taxation throughout the state which raised the revenue for Florida by a lot, I think he would make a great president because he is a moderate republican and isn't as conservative from a social aspect and his wife is Hispanic so he wants to work on immigration reform as well and since he was one of the most successful governors in a long time he is very qualified and prepared for presidency."
6. University of New Hampshire, Durham, New Hampshire
"Bernie Sanders is the best candidate for the upcoming election because he values the rights of women and minorities and will bring a positive social change to America. He also has lots of political experience and truly cares about the voice of the people. #FEELTHEBERN"
7. Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
"Rand Paul. He won't win, he doesn't have the conventional household appeal, but he deserves to as he is the most reasonable and practical."
8. Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana
"I want to reserve judgment until the primaries get closer. At this early stage of the game, candidates on both sides are just vying for publicity and media coverage, and until they can tell me what they can offer for the betterment of America, I can’t definitively tell them that they have my vote."
9. Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
"As of right now I want Ben Carson or Trump: two people that prove that to be a president doesn't mean you need to be a politician."
10. University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia
"I am voting for Bernie Sanders because he's the candidate who most accurately embodies my beliefs on so many different platforms. As a woman, his backing Planned Parenthood and women's rights is extremely important to me because most candidates in this election are interested in politicizing abortion and family planning whereas Bernie Sanders sees it as something women should be able to decide for themselves. I also think it's important to break up the big banks and reduce the huge discrepancy in wealth distribution in the U.S. because there are too many people struggling to justify the amount of wealth owned by such a small portion of U.S. citizens, as someone who will graduating and joining the work force I think that we need a stronger middle class. Those are just the two I agree with most strongly, but I agree with almost all of his ideals because they are opinions that I held before I had even heard of him. It's exciting to see someone who embodies my beliefs so well. Also, I think it will be refreshing to have a Jew in office."
11. Villanova University, Villanova, Pennsylvania
"I want Donald Trump to win. Why? Despite the fact that he will most likely ruin all foreign relations, he tells it like it is and is truthful when he speaks. He doesn't beat around the bush like normal politicians and that is something that I not only respect, but it is a breath of fresh air for America. Let's make America fucking great again."
12. Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama
"I want Ben Carson to be president because of his views on gun control."
13. University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California
"At this point no candidate has won my vote. I want a smart, fair, confident and ethical candidate committed toward providing a better tomorrow and I don't trust any of the current candidates at the moment with my future."
14. The College of New Jersey, Ewing, New Jersey
"I want Donald Trump to win. His pledge to make American great again inspires me. He's a self-made billionaire that's not a slave to private interests and the lobbying industry. Trump cuts through the crap and speaks his mind."
15. Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Geneva, New York
"I want Joe Biden to run based on my satisfaction with Obama, or Bloomberg based on his success in NYC. I'd prefer if my first vote for president didn't go toward Hillary."
16. Loyola University Maryland, Baltimore, Maryland
"Trump says what they [the people] wanna hear. He doesn't mean what he says because his promises are outlandish and just to get attention. His PR group is so adamant about getting his name out because the majority of America who isn't [invested] in how the presidential running will go and [choose] Trump because they know the name and that's all they hear. I mean, honestly it's respectable of his team and really fucking smart, but if he wins, you know why, and it's not because of his presidential ability but because he took over social media. BEN CARSON 2016!!!!!!!!!"
