As a human being, I have one question for our entire species: Where did our humanity go?
Mothers, fathers, children and infants, who are doing all they can to escape a country ravaged by war, that are seeking safety in our country are being met with nothing but hate and resentment.
Why is this? Because we have let our fear outweigh our compassion. We have let a couple of extremists taint our view and our welcoming of an entire race of people.
I read this statues earlier on Facebook that went something like this, "Say you had 10 grapes but 2 of them were poisonous. You did not know which ones were poisonous. Would you still eat the grapes?"
I won't get into how that analogy is dehumanizing and downplays the situation. I will say though that these refugees are people. Not every one of them is an extremist who are using this situation to his/her advantage, they are not all killers who are going to attack you in the night, and they are not the boogeymen that some media outlets are portraying them to be. They are people who need help.
I personally think that it is great what our government is doing to help out. I do not think that it is wrong that the refugees are receiving various forms of assistance, whether its tax dollars or what have you. They will begin to work and they will pay taxes. And down the line they will be offered citizenship if they choose to go that path.
I think people need to stop letting terrorists distort their image of a whole group of people. If that happens, that is when the terrorists really win.
So remember, People's true colors show in times of crisis like the ones we are facing today. But above all else, don't lose your humanity, stay compassionate, and care for your fellow humans.
