Apparently, without even realizing it, millennials are killing a bunch of industries. Instead of buying a movie theatre ticket, we buy avocado toast. Although, I’m not sure all of the blame can be put on us. There are definitely other influencing factors that have taken popularity away from certain businesses. But here are five industries that we've definitely taken away from, in some way.
1. Postcards
I’m not sure how this is being blamed on millennials and not the rise of technology, but that’s what’s happening. Big postcard businesses are closing their doors, but when people can share a photo from around the world online, what did they expect?
2. Diamonds
Shocker. We aren’t buying expensive diamonds with money we don’t have. I’d also rather spend that same money on a trip to a different country rather than some material possession.
3. Movie theatres
There are so many online movie-showing platforms that it makes sense for people not to make the trek to movie theatres anymore. That, and the fact that there is a multitude of illegal movie streaming websites that make for a decreased need to see movies in a theatre.
4. Marmalade??
I honestly couldn’t tell you the difference between marmalade and jam, if there even is one. Nevertheless, we are killing the marmalade industry because people under 28 are the smallest demographic buying it. Oops.
5. Napkins
So this one makes a lot of sense actually. Instead of using actual napkins, people have just started using paper towels, which I am guilty of. My question is why specifically buy napkins when paper towels double as cleaning agents and napkins?
