Millennials are often considered, by older generations, to be the suckiest. There are several reasons that older people claim we are the absolute worst, however, the reasons could not be more invalid. Of course, with all generations, there is a percentage of people to which these opinions apply but the few should not represent the majority. Here are six opinions about millennials that aren’t true and shouldn’t be allowed to define us.
1. Millennials don't know what hard work is.
Well, this is just false. I, as many other students do, balance a rigorous education with a part-time job and that pretty much takes up all of my time, including weekends. Occasionally I somehow find time to enjoy myself but 90% of my life consists of school and work. In fact, according to CNBC , over the past twenty-five years, more than 70% of students have worked while going to college.
Additionally, according to The Pew Research Center, more than half (54%) of the millennial generation has at least some college education. This a higher percentage than any other generation. Not only do we know what hard work is but we’re willing to do it to reach our goals.
2. Millennials are narcissists.
Nope. The opinion that millennials think that they’re the best, most beautiful generation is such a fallacy it’s almost laughable. According to the Washington Post, millennials report, “...a degree of self-loathing that outranked the other generational groups.” Do we enjoy posting selfies on social media? Yeah. Do we think we can change the world? Some of us, maybe. But aren’t these good things? Do these actions and thoughts not reflect healthy, strong self-esteem? We are highly conscious of the flaws of our generation, especially since they’re constantly pointed out to us.
3. Millennials are entitled and selfish.
False. According to the Pew Research Center, when asked which of the following was the most important thing in their lives, millennials had higher percentages than old generations for “being a good parent” (52%), “helping others in need” (21%) and “being successful in a high-paying career” (15%). Making parenting, helping others and personal success priorities do not sound entitled or selfish to me.
4. Millennials are too sensitive about everything.
This opinion is simply one that stems from misunderstanding our passion to right societal wrongs with hypersensitivity. Our generation is the most diverse generation in history and practicing toleration is a priority for most of us. We rank the highest in racial diversity with 39% of us belonging to racial and ethnic minorities, according to PEW, and according to NBC , 20% of our generation identify as LGBTQ.
With these notable increases in population diversity, it is not surprising that our toleration towards groups different from our own also increases. According to Pew , 47% of millennials are tolerant toward races and groups other than their own, significantly higher than older generations at 19%. Since we are so much more accepting, it makes sense that we would be more defensive.
5. Millennials rely on their parents too much, for too long.
Do we rely on our parents more than previous generations? Yes. Remember that funny thing going on in our country called a recession? Yeah, that. It’s been hitting us hard. According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, “Wage losses can amount to about 9% of annual earning at first.
Research suggests that even after recovery, college graduates who enter the workforce during a weak economy will continue to experience a relative wage loss for at least 15 more years.” So, yes we may rely on our parents more but we have a reason and we like our parents more than previous generations too so it’s ok.
According to Pew, 63% of millennials say that it is an adult child’s responsibility to take care of their elderly parents and 56% report that they hardly ever or never have major arguments with their parents. So, there.
6. Millennials are obsessed with sex.
Just because it is now easier than ever to access sexually explicit material with use of the Internet that doesn’t mean that we’re sexual deviants. Just because we are more comfortable discussing sex and we’re more sexually educated that doesn’t mean we’re sex addicts.
According to Business Insider, 15% of millennials are not sexually active which is a lot more than previous generations when they were our age with only 6% reporting not being sexually active.
Dr. Helen Fisher, an anthropologist and Chief Scientific Advisor at Match.com, says that millennials don’t have as much sex as previous generations because, “...millennials are focusing on their careers over sex and love, and holding off on having regular sex until they're ready to commit to a serious relationship.” I guess we just have better things to do.
We’re a misunderstood generation, we millennials. Our lives are a lot easier than previous generations in a lot of ways and we often do not struggle in the same ways our elders did but this is not to say we don’t have struggles of our own. Being a member of this generation is difficult but we are a generation of dreamers, lovers, and achievers.
We want to better our world and we’re willing to work hard and sacrifice to do so. Don’t be so quick to judge us based on our love of technology, tendency to speak openly about sex and a slight obsession with selfies. There’s more than meets the eye here and you’ll be missing out if you underestimate us.
