Our generation is great, no doubt. Although young, we’ve shaken up society quite a bit. Our movements for gender and race equality in the nation have led to conflicts and conclusions alike. Our craving for progress has assisted in creating the most competitive academic standards ever. And yes, today’s tech savvy world is practically run by us twenty-somethings.
However, many would argue that Millennials need improvements. Our generation is obsessed with what others think of them and we can't get off our smartphones. We are so connected with the world around us, yet lack that connection at the same time. We Millennials rely on and feed off of the opinions of others more than any other generation, and forget to enjoy the world around us. With that said, it's time to show the world we really have our stuff together.
Here are seven ways to up the ante as a Millennial:
1. Get a newspaper subscription
The New York Times has a $1 monthly online subscription for college students, how great is that? Your friend’s controversial Facebook status is not always the best news source. Unlimited access to The Times is the way to go.
2. Don’t post it
If you share every little moment on social media, you will have nothing new to talk about next time you bump into a casual Facebook friend. Keep some things just for you. (Although I’m sure there are a couple people who truly do care that your dog got lost in the woods for 37 minutes last Tuesday.)
3. Buy a camera
It can be fun to take photos with a proper camera, and it’s extra fun if you take the time to learn how to use it properly. If this is a bit of a financial ‘no’, there are always disposable cameras. Otherwise, please visit number 6.
4. Read a book
And I’m not talking about the latest Lit assignment that's being graded. Getting wrapped up in a good novel can put life into perspective. Plus it will make you sound like a literate genius if you casually relate a conversation back to the book you just finished reading. Bonus points.
5. Use a map
How do you think our parents did it when we were little? The phrase GPS didn’t even exist until recently yet we have no idea how to use a map. Maybe give yourself ten minutes extra to get there via map, though...
6. Buy a photo album
Print favorite photos you've taken. One day, you’ll be glad you saved the memories. Corkboard and walls are also acceptable locations for your favorite photos.
7. Delete a social media app (or two or three)
Twitter is so 2014 anyway.
On that note, we are still mostly twenty-somethings and, lets be real, the next generation will probably be in grade school by the time we start getting our stuff together.
