The Benefits Of Living In A Midwestern College Town

Maybe someday I'll live in New York City or beachside in Malibu. But for now, life's good in the middle.

I get it, you’re thinking this is just another cheesy post from a college student about why I love my college town. About how home isn’t about where you are, it’s who you’re with. Yadda yadda yadda. Well, I could definitely write an article like that. Maybe I will.

But today I’m thinking about my college town specifically, and how there are things here, in the middle, that there aren’t anywhere else. Right now I'm sitting inside, looking outside at the grass and trees that literally couldn't be greener, and feeling grateful.

1. Sunsets

There ain't nothing like a North Dakota sunset. Get you a state where you can sit by the window and look at the best sunset while doing your homework.

2. Smell of grass

One of the first things I noticed when I moved here, and still so relevant.

3. Snow days

If I'd stayed in California, I never would've known the bliss of looking at my phone in the morning, seeing it was a snow day, and going back to bed.

4. Cheese curds

My first time ever eating these was at a street fair at the beginning of freshman year. And I can't believe that I didn't know what I was missing out on.

5. Frozen custard

Now I want it all the time. Ice cream isn't good once you've had custard which is just so thick and wonderful.

6. The unique shops

Everyone aspires to look as cute as the models at Kittsona. And being surprised with chippers from Widman's Candy Shoppe is the best surprise. The other day, I tried a chocolate-covered pickle downtown. It wasn't my favorite, but it was still an experience.

7. Trips are exciting!

When you live in a small town, it makes it all that much more exciting when you get to venture outside of it to a bigger city.

8. Being able to say, "If I hadn't decided to go to *insert small town in the Midwest*, I never would've *insert great thing you've accomplished or the best friends you've made*"

Ooh, so close. Couldn't make it without being cheesy.

Maybe someday I'll live in New York City or beachside in Malibu. But for now, life's good in the middle.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
