The Mess That Is Syracuse Housing

I bet this ruined your week

The Mess That Is Syracuse Housing

In This Article:

I'm sure every sophomore looking to find on-campus housing went through this hellish process. I ended up getting lucky at the end, but trust me, that week was easily one of the most stressful times of this semester. I talked to over 20 people before that day who was close to tears because they either got screwed over by their potential roommates or got a housing number that would make it impossible for them to not end up on South Campus.

With my situation, I ended up lucking out. Similar to everyone else at the University, my first choice was a 3-person suite in Watson. But with my lottery number the second day, I knew this was ultimately impossible. With 5 people in my friend group, we had to split up into a triple and we knew if we didn't get one, someone would end up alone.

When my time came to choose, Watson was completely filled up and it was only the second day. Therefore, the only option was to split up into a double and a single in Ernie. Don't get me wrong, Ernie is amazing, but splitting up was tough. However, we figured it out and we somehow still ended up on the same floor so it worked out. Follow these steps to avoid this next year Freshman!

1. Have back up plans

My friends and I avoided talking about this subject for such a long time because we were nervous about what we were going to do. We also knew that someone was going to get screwed over, so if we talked about this earlier, we wouldn't have this issue in the first place. Make sure you have other options, especially if you have a bad lottery number...AKA anything later than the very first day.

2. Be optimistic

Honestly, it is more than likely you won't end up getting your first choice for housing. To avoid disappointment, find the positives of the other dorms that aren't Watson or Ernie. Each dorm has some positive aspects, so remember that and don't be upset!

3. If you get put on South, try your best to get out

Although some people really do like an apartment style of living, the location for me could never work. I don't know about other people, but having to wake up to catch a bus and not be in walking distance would be the worst situation for me. I've heard multiple stories of people contacting ODS and getting themselves out of there.

Wherever you end up it will be ok! Be optimistic, and if I had any advice my biggest piece would be to have a backup plan and match with someone that has a better lottery number. Good luck!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
